Bo's Dinnertime v 1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked I loved the clean interface/graphics of this app. It was easy to figure out what needed to be done at each step through the sequence. This is a great app for teaching first/then sequential concepts as well as for matching shapes and working on colors and counting. There is a lot of language expansion that can happen with young children or as a speech therapy tool.
Improvements I was at first confused by the icon for taking a picture that is in the portion of the app where you can give the children food to eat. The icon was not clear to me and because it did not seem to have an associated "sound' when you touch it you didn't know what it was doing or whether you had activated it or not. I ended up with a bunch of photos in my photo library that were unintended! Not a deal breaker on this app, especially now that I know what that icon is for, but I think the app could be slightly improved with either a "camera click" sound for that button or changing the image.
General review A great app for young children but also for somewhat older children who have language delays. It gives the child practice with a variety of basic concepts in a fun and engaging way. The app is easy to figure out and the graphics and sounds are pleasant. I would like to see them add a 'click' sound or change the image on the button that allows you to save an image to your photo gallery, but that is not a deal breaker on this great app!

Tap Times Tables - Multiplication fun [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked It provides a fun and engaging way to practice times tables - much more fun than flash cards! The interface is clean and it was easy to figure out how to change settings to work on 1s all the way up to 12s. My daughter (9) liked the cute squirrels and acorns as reinforcers!
Improvements The ability to select a subset of numbers to work on as the child progresses. My daughter can do the 1s easily and even 5s are not hard so to challenge her even more it would be great to be able to select all but the 1s and 5s or work on specific sets that are more challenging. Other than that it does what it needs to do to work on those times facts! It is a bit on the pricey side for what it can do. I would be more likely to buy it at .99 or even 1.99!
General review My 9-year-old and I played together with this app (and worked on her times tables at the same time!). It provides a fun way to work on math facts with a simple, clean interface and cute squirrels as reinforcement. I wish that you could customize the challenge mode as 1s and 5s are very easy for my daughter - if I customized it I might leave out the ones that she has mastered. Give it 4 stars only due to the slightly high price for what it does.

Visual Routine v2.0.2 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked This app has a very simple and easy to understand interface for setting up a visual routine or schedule. I really like that it allows for auditory prompts as well for those individuals who cannot read. The ability to check off items as they are competed is also great and a must for this kind of app. I was able to set up a routine with no instructions! Clean, easy and well thought out design!
Improvements One thing that this app doesn't have is the ability to include a short video as part of the steps in the routine. I know a few other apps that have this feature but the interface isn't as nice, so I would love to have this app include video modeling as well! Increasing the number of stock photos would also be a great thing!
General review This app allows you to easily set up a visual routine for an individual to help increase their independence in following through with a task. The customizations are well thought out and include the ability to use your own photos as well as record auditory prompt for non-readers. I would love to see the addition of video modeling and perhaps more stock images to choose from.

Learn ABC Phonics v1.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked This is a very simple app with a clean interface and has some nice information to help parents guide their child's learning. It helps a child learn the letter-sound correspondences and works nicely on fine motor skills through guided practice of letter formation.
Improvements I would love to see a better variety of animations given as feedback. I could see children quickly becoming bored with the same couple of animations that are provided in this app. It would also be great to expand the phonics lessons with animations that go along with the letter sound (like an animated alligator for the letter "a" or a pirate for the letter "p"....). Then the parents could point out and say "oh, look! A pirate! Pirate starts with p!" For example).
General review A basic app for working on fine motor skills and letter formation. Clean interface with nice instructions for parents. May not be very motivating after a few times through. the animations are not very varied and don't add to the learning experience. There are a lot of phonics apps out there and this one doesn't "shine" or stand out in what it offers although I like the information provided to parents.
