Bo's Dinnertime v 1.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked The activity is appealing to preschool and early elementary age children, and it has a sound educational base. I like the different activities involved in completing the app. Sequencing, matching and sorting, concept use - very appealing to the children interacting with it. I like the fact that there is visual support provided for the auditory activities.
Improvements The speaker speaks slowly, and you can't complete the activity until she stops speaking, which is hard for some of my children with impulsivity issues. They attempt to complete the task before she finished speaking, then lose interest when the app doesn't respond.
General review I enjoyed this app, and I like the premise. I think the author has a good idea, and if the issue with the speaker is taken care of, it will be an excellent application. The different activities involved keep a child's attention, and have good educational basis.

Alphabet Jumbled v1.0 [text]

What I liked My preschool and kindergarten children love this application! Even some of my first and second graders like the challenging alphabet jumble. The app is colorful and engaging and holds the children's attention. They enjoy interacting with the activities, especially the last two challenges. The app is reasonably priced.
Improvements I think the music could be improved - maybe changing the tunes, or having different tunes available. To make the app appropriate for older students, you could add some phonological awareness activities (i.e. inital sounds, final sounds, rhyming). Overall, I think the app is great!
General review My students and I like this app, and found it engaging and entertaining. They often asked to play with it again and again. I especially like the activity where they have to put 5 or 6 letters from the middle of the alphabet in order. That is an advanced skill, and one that many children need to practice. Providing an activity like that makes practice fun.

5th Grade Math: Splash Math Worksheets App [HD Lite] v2.3.2 [text]

Rating
What I liked I absolutely LOVED this app! I found it engaging and fun to play! My fifth graders loved it, but I also used it with sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth graders, and they enjoyed it just as much! I liked the options the app provided, and thought the math problems covered a myriad of skills. This app is a winner!
Improvements I would like to see the same type of math application for different grade levels, or maybe covering different math skills. For younger children, an app addressing addition, multiplication, subtraction and division facts, for instance, along with money and time. Perhaps chapter (or skill) mastery tests as well.
General review This application gets a five-star rating from me!! I liked the skills addressed, and the instruction provided. I found the app engaging and fun to play, and so did my students. The app was very reasonably priced, and using it was self-explanatory. I would willingly buy similar apps for different grade levels.

Jellybean Tunes - Learn to Read and Compose Music (version 1.2) [text]

What I liked This application is both visually and auditorally entertaining. The "play" mode allows the child to produce familiar songs by touching the notes. The "create" mode allows creativity to flow as the child develops his own songs, and the " learn" mode does a wonderful job teaching music basics! I really enjoyed going through the lessons and refreshing my memory! The app is engaging and enjoyable, and I think young children and older ones will find it entertaining.
Improvements I would like to see the lessons go even more in depth, teaching basic piano playing skills even. The "learn" mode is easy to follow and being able to practice what you are learning is a plus, certainly. It would be nice, also, to be able to add other background instruments to the mix.
General review I think children of various ages would find this application entertaining, and our budding musicians will love the "create" mode. Allowing you to audiotape your creation and play it back is an added bonus! The app is easy to use, and easy to follow. It is an engaging and enjoyable way to practice basic skills of reading and playing music.

What I liked I liked the preteaching strategy, especially when using the app with toddlers. After spending a few minutes in the LEARN mode, we would switch to the PLAY mode, and performance improved. My clients loved the sticker scenes. There was a nice assortment of backgrounds to choose from, and stickers were earned easily and quickly.
Improvements The voice became monotonous and irritating after a few minutes. I think it was the speed of the speaker - speech was slower than normal and my kids got tired of waiting for the narrator to finish speaking. Also, moving from one stimulus item to the next was slower than I liked. There should be a way to sweep to the next page, or an arrow to speed transitions up.
General review Overall, I liked the premise of this application, and my youngest clients enjoyed using it. It is one that has been chosen over and over on my IPad. If the voice and the speed of transitions are improved, this will certainly receive 5 stars from me. Until then, I will give it 4.

What I liked I found this app to be well organized and easy to use, once I got into it. At first, I was overwhelmed by all the options. Once I got into the app and played with it a little, I was able to enter my income and monthly expenses and I got a clear picture of where our money goes!
Improvements I wish there was some type of a tutorial that would show you how to utilize the different options in the program. It took me a bit of time to figure out how to enter the information, then what to do with it once it was entered! Once I figured it out, it was easy to use. I haven't been able to figure out if the program is password protected, which is something I think it needs to be, since all my financial information is there.
General review Overall, I like the app. I will continue to use it, as I spent a fair amount of time entering information into it. As noted above, I would like a password protection. It would also be beneficial to have two or three accounts available, as I can see using the program for my teenage daughters, as well.
