Bo's Dinnertime v 1.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked The concepts that are addressed in this app are good (basic colors, matching, identifying specific foods, counting, and the placement of items to set the table). The colors are bright with fun music. The app allows you to skip segments if you'd like using the arrow key on the screen. I was pleased to see that the food items changed if you repeated the "game."
Improvements A toddler would need assistance with this app and I think it may be to simple for a 5 or 6 yr. old. The food needs to stay looking like food when it is put in a cupboard - it should not disappear. The potato looks like a cookie - possibly choose a different vegetable (broccoli or green beans). The puzzle for the table cloth needs to be accepted if it is close along with the setting of the table. A young child will not have the fine motor skills to place those exactly on the correct spot.
General review This app works on basic concepts for younger children in a dinnertime setting. A toddler may struggle to complete the tasks without adult assistance, particularly the puzzle type activities that require exact matching instead of close or "magnetized" proximity to the desired space. It would be fun to have an option to allows the child to pick what food to buy from the grocery store. Overall has a good concepts, fun music, and is brightly colored

Grimm's Frog King 1.01 [text]

What I liked I liked the app because it used an "old fairy tale" and told the original story and then the funny twist version was a nice addition to help explore/explain what kids may be thinking as they heard some of the original. It also opens the door for discussions about the original. I also enjoyed the artwork and that you could "pull" the picture to enlarge it.
Improvements The only thing I would like to see improved is to highlight the words when it is reading it to you. That way if you had a struggling reader they would see exactly what word is being said as they have their "eyes on the print." It could be an option under the read to me tab to have it say read to me and highlight the text.
General review This is a great app for educational and family reading. It could be used in teaching about original fairy tales and then doing more modern day versions. It would be easy to use it individually or to have it projected and a whole class follow along. The "funny twist version" helps to facilitate what children maybe thinking as they heard the original story. The pictures are nicely done with some interactions.

5th Grade Math: Splash Math Worksheets App [HD Lite] v2.3.2 [text]

What I liked I really thought this app was great. I think it has potential for teachers to use for student's struggling and needing reinforcements or for a student to practice at home or with parents. I also really like how a parent could have the progress emailed to them.
Improvements I really like this app. I couldn't think of anything I would like changed so I gave it to an 8th grader and said try it and what could be improved. The only comment he gave me was sound - that didn't bother me but from a kids perspective he said buzzer for wrong answer and pleasant noise for correct answer. He even said background music would be good - I say quiet classical in the background. :)
General review Loved this app. I think it has potential for teachers to use for student's who are struggling and needing reinforcements or for a student to practice at home with parents. It is very thorough and I like how you can track the child's progress by having it emailed to you.

Trucks JigSaw Puzzles [text]

What I liked This is a fun app that any truck loving child would like. I like that if you were close to where a puzzle piece should go that it would be "magnetized." Also like the short anamation that occurrs after you successfully put a puzzle together. It is nice to have an option to keep the background puzzle in as a pattern to follow.
Improvements I don't know if it is possible, but it would be nice if the pieces were initially on the outside of the puzzle board as it can appear overwhelming to a child to figure out that they need to move these pieces aside to "sort them" or clearly see where they need to place them.
General review This is a fun puzzle app for any truck loving child. It's setting allows you to time yourself or each other and it also allows you to have the puzzle "picture" in the background, or to put it together without the pattern showing. The best part is that when you put each truck puzzle together it has a short animation.

Shape Pals [text]

What I liked I like the idea behind this app to help teach shapes to young children. The app has colorful shapes and uses bright colors which would be engaging. I also apprecitated that you can control having the music off and voice off if you want which helps if a student is distractable.
Improvements I like the basis of this app, however; I do think that some of the shapes are not appropriate for a young child (ex. rhombus, parallelogram, ec). The children that will find this app "fun" are not of an age to learn these "higher level" shapes. I would also like to see the people be either more animated or have a "higher" tech look.
General review The ideas behind this app are great. However, I do think some of the shapes may be too difficult for a young child. For example a rhombus or parallelogam would be more for an older child. This app is designed for young children and the basic shapes (ie. square, heart, and triangle, etc) are appropriate.
Overall, I think portions of this app would be beneficial for young children learning their shapes.

What I liked I liked this app right from the start! The music is fun but not overpowering and you could figure it out within 30 seconds if you didn't read the directions for parents. I like the sequencing of the math tasks and that it starts with finger counting and moves to numbers and dots (dominoes).
Improvements I would like to see a title at the top of each activity (ex. subtraction using fingers or sequencing, or Show off all your skills -on the last screen - but don't call it a test). I wish the rewards were more varied - make one time confetti and the next the tiger or light up the snail or something. As an educator I wish there was a way to not allow the middle finger to be put up without another finger - kids will figure that out....PROBLEM!
General review I loved this app! This is one of the best math apps I have seen for younger children. The sequencing of activities is appropriate and fun. This app can be used in teaching basic math skills or as a reinforcer or used at home to help a struggling student.

Budget Balance, version : 1.2 [text]

What I liked I think this app provides great information and breaks it down into very specific categories so that you can easily view the reports to see the overall picture. I like how it allows for entering things by month, week, day, etc. and that you can make notes on your entries or even a picture. Love the graph options.
Improvements My family uses a budget on a computer spreadsheet. I thought this was actually too cumbersome and specific. I felt like I had to keep hitting buttons and making choices when I just wanted to quick enter a total for groceries and move on. I wish it there was a way to just have a list and enter the amounts and then have a graph capabilities. I was disappointed at the time it took for me to click buttons and enter info.
General review This app gives you a very specific budget picture. It allows you to get very in depth and thorough so you can produce a variety of graphs to track your spending. I wish that it was not as detailed so that it was quicker to make your data entries.

Pin Tiki Ball 1.0 [text] [video]

What I liked This is a fun game. It operates like a true pinball but yet it was fun to have a "twist" from a standard game by having the fireballs, scorpions, and guards. It is brightly colored and bright. There is lots of fast paced action and fun music. It's nice to have the descriptions of some of the items.
Improvements I would like to have more descriptions with also info on how to stop the snakes (my family all thinks we are suppose to ) but without more specifics that is hard to do. In the settings there needs to be a way to stop it's panning/zooming movements- my teenagers even hate the zooming in and out.
General review This is a fun pinball game with a few unexpected twists. It has great graphics and speed. However, I wish the panning camera that zooms in and out could be shut off in the settings. Some of the things you work with are scorpions, fireballs, flying fruit to smash, and guards watching over you.

Sentence Builder [text] [video]

Rating
What I liked This app has great concepts to help in an education setting and in speech therapy along with home practice for students. I appreciated having 2 levels and that it got hard enough that there are extra words to make it more difficult. It is great that you can also make up your own and add a picture to it.
Improvements I would like to have e pictures more up to date and "real" as some of the pictures even seemed some what creepy (ones with open eyes). I don't want it to tell me the sentence is correct until I want to check it. I would also like to do multiple sentences or select them and then just keep going with it, The "reward" needs to be something fun- puzzle or quick game based on your accuracy in the sentences (10 seconds of play for each correct on first try or something).
General review This app has great concepts to help in an education setting or in speech therapy along with home practice for students. The app needs to allow one to just continue working in a drill fashion and to receive some sort of motivating reward for correct answers. Overall this app has great potential.

Find them all: looking for animals [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This app is great for teaching animals and their sounds along with their habitats. I liked that it provided facts about each animal after you take a picture. It was also nice to have the other activities in this app (the cameraman, puzzles, and the animal quiz).
Improvements I would love to see an American English voice as an option. At times I founds myself thinking what did it say? The problem was with the heavy English accent. As an educator I would want a small child hearing the speech that they will be learning to use. I also wish that all of the habitats came in the app. or that as one progressed you could access them.
General review This is a fun and educational app for young children to find and learn about the different animals in a variety of habitats. As you progress in the game you get to snap pictures and make puzzles along with learning facts about the animal. I would recommend this to other educators or parents.

What I liked I liked that one could turn the sounds totally off or not and that it could be set to read the story to you. I think it is a story app that could be used in the classroom for teaching purposes. I think it could also be used in a foreign language class and use it as a teaching tool to have it in French and the students translate it.
Improvements I wish that the pictures were a higher quality graphics. I would also like to have the ability to swipe the page to turn it instead of hitting an arrow button, it would also be nice to have maybe comprehension questions at the end or more "play" / fun activities built into it too.
General review I liked the app for teaching purposes, however, I don't think many students would find it engaging due to the graphics of the pictures and the lower technology for swiping and interaction of the story. Some of the pictures and the easel allowed one to touch it and something happened, but not enough to really engage a kid to want to keep on with it.

SirMania - Play & Learn v1.1 [text] [video]

What I liked I really liked this app. I believe that it is truly geared for 2-6 yr. olds just as you stated. I thought the pictures and interactive scenes were nicely done and that it would be liked by the targeted age group. It was great how the scenes progressed at a nice pace - no boredom setting in and timing to a new activity was also good. I also liked the counting page - you could touch the pictures to count and see the numbers vs. having to have the skill to count them and ID the number. I would also use it in a classroom setting.
Improvements The biggest complaint I have with the app is the voice. It sounded digitalized and like it was coming from a tunnel. I think that if it is geared for young children, that the speech needs to be precise and clear - which it isn't. I wish your face book secrets were posted with the app too on the menu screen - great tidbits there.
General review I liked this app. I would use it as a parent and I would also use it as an educator. The pictures are beautiful and the animation is just right for this age group. I would like to have the voice be clearer and not sounding digitalized but I like the rest of the app so well, I will overlook that with the hopes the developer fixes it.

Lulu in the Amazon [text]

Rating
What I liked I liked the the basic concept of this app. The pictures are nice and animation is good. I appreciated having the words that were spoken on each page. It would be great if there were real pictures of the Amazon area at the end of this app - really help for educational purposes! The games and activities are spaced out nicely within the story to keep kid's attention.
Improvements This app is extremely frustrating - when I got to the end of the story I got stuck and I could not get back to the book. I also got to this page initially by hitting the little icon at the bottom with the + and then I touchedthe globe and it got me to the same page at the end and I got stuck again and could not get out without deleting the entire app and re-downloading it! It would be great to highlight the words as they are spoken. I'd also like the cats voice changed- annoying!
General review This app has a story about the Amazon . There are some great terms/vocab learning that could take place while using it. Kids will also enjoy some fun little games that are intertwined with the story which will help keep their attention. I would like to see the text highlighted as it reads the story. Two times I experienced getting shut out of the app. and I had to delete it and reload it!

PhotoGridPro v2.1 [text]

What I liked This app was great! I loved how easy it was to use! We just returned from a trip with hundreds of pictures. My teenagers and I used this app to make some neat collage type pictures and the editing buttons are just genious! Again, they are easy to use and navigate! The stickers were also very fun to use!
Improvements The only thing that I could see that could improve it is to have more collage forms to choose from. I wish there were a few more configurations to chose from. I realize I could shrink a set square, but it only was manipulative within what appeared to be a set area. I wanted to shrink one and make another one bigger and run it into the space of the one I shrunk (I hope that makes sense :). It seemed like they had fixed areas that weren't expandable - only could shrink.
General review This app was AWESOME! It has many editing tools that are very simple to use along with humorous stickers that can be incorporated. The best part was making a collage and saving it with your photos and then being able to download it to print! Fabulous and super easy and fun. I'd recommend it to anyone - can beat it for a free app!

Hamster Chase [text] [video]

Rating
What I liked This has graphics that are appropriate for even small children to "play" and they are very family friendly. The music is fun and up-beat which would also entice small children. It is probably going to also work as a family game as a small child will need help past the first couple of levels. I really appreciated the button that let me try the level again when I got stuck and yet I didn't have to start over or only get a certain number of lives and then start over.
Improvements I would like to have it not require so much movement to be used - some yes - but as my teenager said you would look crazy doing this where others see you. The other main problem I have is that it needs to be made for children or "older kids/adults" as the theme and graphics are for young kids but the skill needed to complete most levels are not little kid friendly.Go with more 3D and not a hamster/cats etc. and add some tutorials in and you may have the interest of the older target group. I would also like to have an option to do it with my fingers vs. motion-a small child would have success
General review I think this has potential as a family app as smaller children will like the idea of the hamsters, however, older children will find it not very exciting to play a video game with hamsters in balls. This game requires gaming skills of an older child/adult to pass successfully onto the different levels and not be frustrated.

Tomo Garage [text]

Rating
What I liked This app has fun music, is brightly colored and has fun animation. The concept are good to match the letters to spell the objects. It could be beneficial for teaching, however, it would need some tweaking. I see this as mainly being used for entertainment purposes.
Improvements I wish that this app would only allow you to match the letters in the order of the word - you can match them out of order or just touch letters and it responds as if it is correct. I don't know why you can't do something with these objects on the garage page. I uncovered six objects and still couldn't do anything with them other than to have it name them for me. I wish one could "play" with that scene with the objects. It also needs a tutorial.
General review This app is appropriate for entertainment of young children, but I don't see it for teaching purposes without it being tweaked. The matching is great if it would only take the letters in the order of the word - not any letter at any time. The graphics are good. This app needs a tutorial.

Tomo House [text]

Rating
What I liked I like the idea of kids noticing the everyday objects around them. It is great to have the ability to change the accents from British to English - very necessary with young children. The colors and music are fun. I also liked the the "word" spelling was magnetized. I hate to say it but I was pleased it was only $.99, as I struggled to find things I liked.
Improvements For starters, I think it needs an icon or area where you give directions on what you expect a child to do with this. I think the idea behind this app is good and has great education application, but most kids aren't learning to spell the word and identifying/seeing the object. I didn't like to keep putting the words together and not do something immediately with it. Never could figure out what the purpose of the house was - I couldn't get the objects (fence/plate/desk, etc) into the house or see it in the house. You need real looking objects and ability to place them immediately.
General review The idea behind this app is commendable, but I don't see it grabbing the attention of small children. I don't like that you have to spell each word to get a picture that you can't immediately doing something with. I thought it was going to let me place the items in the house but I couldn't seem to do that . It was great to be able to set the accent you needed. This app needs directions.

What I liked I really liked the app. I think it could be used as a class activity/early childhood (especially if it was mirrored so everyone could see). Obviously it is also great for a parent to do with a young child. I liked the animation- it required the chld to be actively involved. The part I was the most excited to see was the listings at the end of the common core standards - brilliant!
Improvements The characters are a bit odd in my opinion, but I'll look past that as I really did like the app. I wished that the alphabet/water game would allow you to have the leters not in order and you had to truely pick the order (instead of A B C have B A C). I also wanted to have the ability to use my finger or a stylus to do the coloring activity vs. just taping the area and it automatically filled it in.
General review Great app for parents and teachers. The story can be read to you or it allows for reading and playing. There is fun animation that a child is actively involved in. There are also counting and alphabet games. This app even provides the common core standards that it aligns with (important to educators).

Animal Planet Hide & Seek Pets [text]

Rating
What I liked Loved the app! It seems like there were many choices and different twists based on your choice-no getting bored! I think that it needs to be marketed to not only young children but to also teachers of preschool/kinderg. Having the common core standards readily available is brilliant! I really appreciated that the puzzle was "magnetized" once you had the piece close. The facts are short and basic - great that the text is highlighted as it reads.
Improvements To be honest, I don't think I would typically spend that amount for a child's app. I looked through the App Store and I didn't see a lite version - I would want to try it or see what it was like before buying it. I don't have improvements other than I'd like to have the option to trace letters without following the dots. I like the dots but I'd also like to just freely trace it once one mastered the dot tracing.
General review Overall the app has great graphics, facts for children, and engaging activities. This has common core standards that teachers can utilize too. It allows for the child to choose from many tasks including puzzles, letter tracing, coloring, and sticker play. I'd highly recommend this app to both parents and teachers.

Word Crush Mania v1.1 [text] [video]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I agree the game is addictive! It seems like their are many variations/twists that are out of one's control which keep you re-trying to do better. I like that it is timed and you can get to new "levels" and can spin the wheel for coins, etc. I do like the "bombs" and other items you can use coins tor.
I ran out of room in the next box but you need to know that it's very hard to find this app in the store-a search of word crush doesn't show it. Had to use the link here to find it to write the review. ;(
Improvements I strongly feel that if you buy a tool or power up that you keep it until you use it-not fun to "buy it" and not and then not need it so you lose it. I am thinking in terms of widening its use as an app - I would like to see a kids version or educational version and maybe one needs to hit a "submit' button or enter when you have your word spelled-I spelled some that I didn't know I spelled or that it was a word. It would also need a way to turn off purchasing coins (vs. just earning them in the game) and I wouldn't like the links to getting other games and to Facebook .
General review This is a fun app and there is just enough mixture of luck and some word knowledge to play this timed game. It can be played by all ages and is highly addictive as you keep trying to spell words for more points before your time runs out or you hit the wall.

CBC Radio [text] [video]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This app has many features and has many shows/channels available to the user. I liked the On Demand area as it was "sorted" and easier to follow. I liked how it has different CBC radio 1, 2 across the top. I don't think this app will pull in people that aren't familiar with CBC. My family does listen to Public Broadcasting etc. and I think we'd really like the CBC if it was visually more simple (think in terms of if you don't know Canada - what would people need to easily navigate this app). (an an example -see the app called Public Radio Player for easy visual app to follow).
Improvements This app is not "user friendly." The screen is very cluttered in appearance and one feels like you need to "work at it" or play with it a lot to get it going like you want. I would also like to see things like: Jazz, Blues, Comedy, Bach, etc. I think what you have is great, just de-clutter the screens to make it user friendly. I also had difficulty getting things to start playing when I put them in favorites - loads forever...
General review I would love to see less visual clutter and have things more organized by genre. The on demand area is nice and is somewhat sorted. It is nice that you can establish your favorites. A few items took way to long to load, but overall this app allows you to access the CBC. May even be able to tell music teachers or humanities teachers about it for teaching purposes if the genres were easy to access.

Calm Down Now [text]

What I liked I think you did a nice job with this app. The voice is very "calming" and "emotionless". The app is easy to use and directions are all clear and simple to follow. I loved the relaxing sounds and how you can pick more than one and set a timer. Again-super easy to use. The stop panick and ground yourself also seem simple and clear to follow.
Improvements The only part of this app that I wasn't as sure about was the handbook section. When I open the tapping and unblocking tabs, I wish it could read it to me and also give a bit more info on it. It would be neat if it would also tell you a quick activity to do with that information right there on that tab.
General review Overall, this a a neat app that can be used for calming people that maybe experiencing stress, anxiety or panic attacks. It is super easy to use! There is a also a great relaxing sounds tab and you can pick and mix sounds that are relaxing to the individual - and it has a timer.
