Thumbelina : 3D Pop-up Fairy Tale v1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked This app has nice interaction, even though very little. Very basic and simple. Slow reading. The pop ups are fun and colorful. Like that you can turn the background music off which can be distracting when trying to read. Thumbelina is a cute character, I wish she was more a part of this story though.
Improvements This app could really use a word for word highlighter as the story is read for those kids trying to follow along with the words. There are many stories out that have this, and this app lacks it. Also have noticed that the reading is really slow. Its boring, and does not seem to keep the child's attention. Maybe if it were dedicated to be a bedtime story.
General review I think this app is more for younger readers just starting to read on there own. They can "do it themselves". But for older kids, the story read to them will prove to be way to slow and bore them. The Interacting pop ups do not have enough interaction.

iTooch Middle School [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked I really like that the app has other subjects you can add on when needed. It's really nice that the app keeps track of your progress. I also like that you are able to free hand write out problems on the chalkboard to find your answer. I also like that iTooch gives the opportunity to anyone at no charge to have a chance at making an educational app to add to there add on choices. This app could go a long way.
Improvements According to the description for this app it mentions it being a "fun" way to learn. While going through the app and answering questions I found it to be simple. For me in my opinion though the only thing that was reall fun was the colorful bright orange iTooch character.
General review I can see this app helping a lot of students who might need help learning in a different way. Other than the traditional textbook rules. As well as parents who homeschool their children to use as an extra learning tool. I find it "fun" enough to keep there focus long enough to retain what they just learned. This app does not replace any such subject learned in school, however it's a great additional learning experience to help retain the info.

What I liked I liked that the app was interactive and colorful. The app has options for the child to chose his/herself. I like that there will be other books coming with the same character doing different things so a child could collect them all. I like that the story words are highlighted while its being read to you.
Improvements I would like to see more options for interactions. I didn't seem to understand what the buttons were off to the right side. When you clicked on the bell or others it would just make a sound. It would be nice if it would do something else instead of just a noise. A little to "basic" as it sits. I don't like the sound of the child reading the story. Sounds like they have a stuffy nose or something. Might not be clear enough for most children to hear correctly.
General review This app is more of an interactive book, than "game" for my opinion. Your going through the story while its reading to you, and then you get to choose only a few options that it gives you from a list. And by the end of the story, you have chosen one item from each list and your done with your shopping. A nice little story, with interaction. But I would not consider this to be a game in anyway.

The Lonely Beast ABC [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked I really like that this app is based on a book. This app is really simple for the little ones. I like that each page is interactive by simply touching objects on the scream. The app has very fun sounds when touching different objects. My daughter particularly enjoyed popping the bubbles.
Improvements I like the app the way it is, simple and engaging for younger children. The letter "R" could be sounded out better as it sounds like "OR" instead of saying its name. I don't really have much left to say other than it would be nice if there were other books to choose from with the same concepts as this one.
General review I would not purchase this app if your little one already knows the alphabet by heart, or are looking for a story line. This is simply going through each alphabet letter, with each letter page being interactive. Example Ss is for shell. Its a nice touch that the app shows both upper and lower case letters.

CoverMe - Private Texting & Secure Phone Calls with Password Locked Safe Vault to Protect Secret Contacts, Text Messages, Personal Photos & Videos - V1.0.2 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked I liked the idea of this app. I have been looking around for an app that I could actually lock the specific folders I didn't want my daughter to get into and mess with. I like that this program will protect multiple areas and not just one thing all with just one password.
Improvements I would love to see an option to have separate passwords for the different areas if one chooses to keep them separate. And this app would be AWESOME if there was an upgrade to allow a pass code lock for each folder. That you could chose to lock maybe just one, or two folders and not all the folders as that is the reason the apple products come with a main password option in the first place.
General review I personally didn't find this app intriguing. It has a lot of potential. But for my needs I didn't see the point in setting up another messaging session when I already have the iMessenger. I think it would be a pain in the butt to be checking messages in more than one area. The app was hard to load to the iPad. Had to go into sync settings and add it. Did not want to install automatically.

Matryoshka! deluxe [text]

What I liked I like that it resembles the real nesting dolls. Its fun! At first I thought it was a little boring. But my daughter loved it. So I played around with it a little more and found that I really liked that you can time yourself to see how long it takes to do all the nesting dolls.
Improvements I would like to see the addition of a second player option. Even though this is for younger kids, I think it would be fun to compare the speed between brothers and sisters, or even there little friends. The addition of more dolls would be great as well. But as it stands, there is clearly a lot of choices.
General review This is a very simple interactive game. Its a different kind of a puzzle. This app has appeals to all ages. As who does not like the old antique Russian nesting dolls? For the price of the app, you can get many to choose from right on your iPad without having to search the antique stores or auctions. This game is colorful and the scenes changing is a nice touch. I would recommend this app to both teachers and parents alike.

He is Risen, An Easter Story [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked I liked the real authentic feel of the book while reading the story. I liked the speaker reading to you. It was a nice pace and not annoying like some read to me stories. I love the fact that there are activities to go alone with the story in both easy and hard levels.
Improvements I would love to see an addition of more to the story. I don't like where the story starts I guess. But that is my own opinion. It just feels odd. I would like to see additional activities added in future updates or even as paid in app purchases. I think for $2.99 you get a lot for your money for this book.
General review Overall this is a really nice put together app for all age levels. My whole family enjoyed it, and we had the privilege of getting the app right in time for Easter. The addition of activities that go along with the story is a great touch and helps with comprehension! I would recommend this app to family and friends.

Animal Planet Hide & Seek Pets [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked What did I like about this App? Just about EVERYTHING. For this price you get a app jam packed with fun and educational entertainment that will engage your little one to his/her little hearts content! I love that there are both easy and hard levels to challenge them. And it's always important to have the words highlighted as the reader reads to help with literacy skills at a younger age and this does a great job with that.
Improvements In all honesty I wish this question was optional for Apps like this one as I have had to go back to this app many times trying to find something it could use improvements on. I can really only think of maybe instead of just saying that the turtle is a turtle, since there are more than one kind of turtle tell us what kind of turtle it is. And then add another level of hard and have the child match the picture of the turtle (the animal) with the correct name for it.
General review Although every app could use some improvement in one way or another, I find this app to be very well thought out and engaging. I mysel love Animal Planet, and this app does a wonderful job coinciding with what kids see on TV or even at there zoo or maybe even as there very own pet. This is no boring app, and is chalk full of fun stuff that you'll be glad to have this app and won't regret paying the price.

Kids Planet Discovery. Version 1.4 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked My daughter and I both liked the wide range of activity options that are provided in this App. Colorful, fun, as well as educational. A great start to encouraging our little ones to explore our world while having fun at an early age.Game options were easy enough for my daughter to figure out on her own without getting frustrated. Her favorite was playing the memory card games.
Improvements As much as we love this app. I was slightly disappointed that it was misleading being advertised as a FREE App. And even though it comes with very limited options at no cost to use, in order to have the full experience you are asked to pay $5.00. This is a very reasonable fee for this sort of app filled with real life educational information about different parts of our countries and cultures. However, I feel for the price it really should include more. Having more levels would be awesome as well as adding more places to visit and learn about!
General review The Kids Planet Discovery Version 1.4 is a great starter app. I feel after more improvements and upgrades adding more learning levels with more challenges, as well as adding more areas to discover and learn about would move this app right to the top of the educational apps out there. For now, its a keeper, but as it sits, it will get old fast, unless more information is added. Love the idea that this developer has come up with.

Tic Toc Time: Break down the day to learn how to tell time [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked WOW! First off, any app that you can log into as a parent and check your child's status is a plus in my book. This is really interactive and not in a 2 year old way. Extremely engaging! I almost found myself taking the iPad away from my daughter just so I could give it a try. I really was pleasantly surprised when I saw the section on the Green Academy Montessori Garden! What a great addition! My daughter has been helping me more this summer in our small backyard garden. And what a great way to learn a little more about what she is doing. I love that you can personalize for up to 3 kids.
Improvements I'm starting to wish this question was optional for the apps that need improvement. No one is perfect and there is nothing wrong with improvements as you simply can't please everyone at the same time. However no one is "perfect" and we can always benefit from feedback. Some might complain that the sound on this is on the loud side. However, we do all have a volume control of course. I find it refreshing that I don't have to turn it all the way up in order to hear it. Its nice and clear.
General review I said it before, I will say it again, I love this app! I'm taking it to school with me and will be bringing it forward in front of our tech department in hopes the school will purchase this app for all of our classrooms. Both young and old, its very fun. One thing I would like to say I guess, with the thought of using in classroom, would be for more than one child to play at the same time, with the addition of more than just 3 kids personalized.

Math Mathews : Mental Math 1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked One of the best disguises a app can have. This app sure is sneaky throwing all this math at you and my child seems to blow through it like she don't even know she is learning something on the way. I'm impressed the developer was able to throw so much educational information in this app as this is extremely game oriented.
Improvements I'm wondering if there is almost too much information for a child to choose in order to actually play the game. I set up my daughter as a user, and even though it shows her name the app seems to think we have not set anyone up yet. This app has also froze up and seems slow at times
General review Overall a great app with great potential. A few bugs that could use some tweaking with the record keeping areas of the game. The game is a really good idea and I love the different equations. My 7 year old daughter has fun playing this app, however I find not that shortly after she started the app, was she ready to go to a different app to play something different.

Meet Science: Magnetism and Electricity (v1.0.1) [text]

Link to the App Store

What I liked Both myself and my daughter really LOVE this app on our iPad. This is loaded with information and really fun and addicting games as well. My daughter would actually ASK to play this app as part of her school work (she is homeschooled). I love the experimental videos that give you great ideas to try at home on your own.
Improvements As much as we love this app there is always room for improvements of course. Having more experiments added on a "regular" basis would be a great addition. Ongoing updates on a regular basis to look forward to instead of wondering when the next one will be added.
General review This app is loaded with educational information that engages not only my child but myself as well. The characters are colorful and funny. The option to add words from the Glossary to save in your own dictionary is a great touch. Find lots of information on different Scientists by name in the Glossary as well. A must add app for the curious indeed.
