Animal Farm 3 in 1 - YogiPlay / v 1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This app is very colorful. I liked the sounds and movement made by the animals in the sticker part of the app. I liked that the memory game part of the app had different levels to chose from, allowing the app to grow with the child's ability. This app could be used by preschoolers through 2nd graders.
Improvements I would like there to be more stickers included in the sticker part of the app. On the memory game I would like the option to not see the "solution" before beginning - in other words letting the child play the game without the hints at the beginning of the game.
General review Because there are different choices on the memory game it grows with the child's ability to solve the puzzles. The sticker part is very colorful - very young children would like the animal sounds and movement in this part. The spelling part would be good for letter recognition with preschoolers. Good value.

What I liked I love that this app lets the player have the choice on the number of pieces that the colorful puzzles will have while solving it. I love that you can turn on or off the background hints while doing the puzzle. I also like that the background music can also be turned on or off while completing the puzzles.
Improvements I would like to see more puzzles added. I also wish the additional game screen did not appear as you start the app. I would like to see this as a icon at the top with the other icons to help in the ease of a young child using this app. I also wish that the app would give you a new puzzle without going back to the "start" screen.
General review I feel this app is a great value. It offers a variety of levels which makes it grow with the child. It would be loved by a wide range of ages from preschoolers through early elementary school aged. The timer would be a motivator for many children to beat their last time.

Wubbzy's Fire Engine Adventure [text]

Rating
What I liked I loved the animation included in the story. It definitely adds to he story and holding a young child's attention. I liked that the words were highlighted as it was read. This helps child get the left to right concept while reading as well as the idea of one to one correspondence in printed text.
Improvements I would like to see the fire house game have the option for the letters to appear out of order. I would like to see the child have to recognize the letters rather than simply go from top to bottom in this game. As an educator I would also like the meatball counting to require the child to somehow show they have the correct number of meatballs rather than the truck simply driving off when the correct number of meatballs are loaded.
General review As a teacher and parent I loved the grown up corner. I liked that it included questions to ask the child after the story to work on comprehension and critical thinking skills. I also liked the inclusion f the web site for fire safety tips. But most importantly I loved that the common core corner showing how this app helps meets the various common core standards.

Weather and Clock for Kids [text]

Rating
What I liked I felt this app is good for young children (preschool - early elementary). The graphics are suited for young children. I liked that you could choose between measuring temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius and can change back and forth easily between the two. The various clocks that appear will entertain the children using this app.
Improvements I wish there were more countries to choose from to see the time and temperature. I wish the future forecast will be spoken in addition to he graphics that are included. I wish the time when spoken would include AM or PM. I also wish the time was stated differently such as " one twenty" versus "one hour twenty minutes". I feel this would make it more child friendly.
General review I liked the app but felt the amount of content could have been increased. I was disappointed that it only included 10 locations in addition to the home site you input. This app could be used in classroom to discuss the daily weather and forecasts. It could also be used to explain climates around the world.

What I liked I love the interactive pages of the book. Each page contained its own unique interaction which would keep a young child's attention for an extended period of time. As an educator I loved that you could tap on both the letters and the pictures and it letter of name of the picture would be repeated.
Improvements I wish that the "s" page of the book did not have a "sh" picture. I feel the sound that s makes by itself versus the diagraph sh sound should be on this page. I wish that there was a chose on language as in the United States the "z" page pronounciation would be different.
General review This a a great app but not sure if it is worth the price. With the various interactions on the pages the children would not grow tired on listening and playing with this app. I loved the sound effects also especially the "d" page were the child can play the drums. I like that you can swipe back to previous pages without having to start over from the beginning of the app.

flippi memo v1.0 [text]

What I liked I like that this app is a free play with no correct or incorrect way to play. This app would be a great way for children to play the memory game without having actual cards that can get misplaced. It would be a great on the go entertainment for children to play with each other.
Improvements I wish there was an option to change the illustration on the cards. I would have to see different themes with the playing cards used in the game. I also wish there was an option that allowed you to choose how many cards were shuffled on the playing area which would allow this app to grow with the children playing it.
General review I like the simplicity of this app but am not sure I would pay $1.99 for this app with it current features. I like that there are not restrictions on how you can play this game. This app allows the child to play the memory game as you would play it with actual cards.

Math Mathews 1.0 [text]

What I liked I loved the fast pace of this app. I liked that the app is divided into three sections with each section focusing on a different part of the mathematical equation. I like that this app not only work on finding the product by also required that you input the factors in two of the sections. I also like the practice section.
Improvements I wish you could have the option in a settings area where you could chose the factors that you wanted to be included in the problems. I would like to see the factors go up the number twelve as I feel this is what is being taught in our school systems.
General review The game part of this app is great for practicing and drilling the multiplication tables once they have been learned. The practice area would be a great place for these beginning to memorize their multiplication tables to begin. This app allows both the beginner and the master of multiplication to have success.

What I liked I like the selection of different nesting dolls. It appeals to both girls and boys. The nesting dolls are also very colorful and appealing to a young child. I also like that the number of nesting dolls varies with the different screens. The reward upon completing the screen will be enjoyed by the child playing the app.
Improvements I like the "challenge" mode of the last set of neting dolls but did not realize that was the purpose until I visited the web site. Although it contains a decent number of nesting dolls I would like to see more nesting dolls included. I do not have any other recommendations as I was very happy with this app.
General review This app would keep a youngster occupied for a extended period of time. It is great for the hand eye coordination of the youngsters. The various themes included with the different nesting dolls makes this app very appealing. The cost of the app appears to very appropriate for the content included.

He is Risen, An Easter Story [text]

Rating
What I liked As a teacher in a Christian school I love that this app does a great job of telling the story of Easter to youngsters. It is on their level while still being educational. The inflection used is great for youngsters who are just learning to read to hear. I like the advanced mode that shared additional information for both the child reading as well as being helpful to an adult sharing this app with their child. The Family Chat at the conclusion makes for great interaction and discussion between parent and child.
Improvements I like the forward and back buttons but wish there was a mode where the pages would turn automatically. I like the advanced mode but did not realize it was an option until I went to the more help section. I would like to see this option more prevalent on the home screen. I would also like to see more colors available on the coloring pages.
General review I loved this app when teaching the story to my class of kindergartners. The highlighting of the words while it was being read made it easy for the children to follow along. The additional information in the advanced mode helps this app grow as the child comprehension level increases. The ability to choose what pages you want additional information is a great feature.

Wubbzy The Superhero [text]

Rating
What I liked I like that there are 3 modes to this app. As an educator if young children I love the inflection that is used in the reading of this story. It is great for children to be able to hear the story read in this manner. I like that the stars appear in the screen to show you the parts that are interactive.
Improvements In the Just the Story mode I wish there was an option were the pages would turn automatically when the page is completed. In the game area, I liked the shape game but wished the hint at the top of the screen could be turned off if the parent/child so desired.
General review This is another great Wubbzy app. I love that the parent area includes the common core areas that are included in this app. This feature is also very beneficial to educator who use this app as a part if their curriculum. The interaction of the pages simply adds to the great story being told. This app is definitely one I would recommend to my fellow educators as well as the the parents if my students.

Fractions+ [text]

Rating
What I liked This app is a great app for practicing work on fractions. I loved the teaching lesson/instruction that was included at the various levels. I liked that you can go to any unlocked level and complete more practice if necessary. I like that the fractions are not only included in circles but also on the ruler.
Improvements I was very pleased with this app and did not feel that it needed a lot of improvement. I did see "divide" misspelled as "divid" on the level four instruction screen. A possible addition to include rectangle in addition to the circles might add to this app.
General review This app is set up very well. The ability to choose an unlocked level would enable the school students to focus on the areas that they need to work on until the level is mastered. The cost of this app makes it a great tool that could be used both in the school system as well as for home use.

Animal Planet Hide & Seek Pets [text]

What I liked As an educator I appreciate and love the grown-up corner. This area is a valuable tool to parents. I also like the inclusion of the common core standards, this will allow teachers to incorporate this app into their classroom curriculum knowing it is helping he students meet the standards set up.
Improvements I noticed that this app included mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles but there were no amphibians included in this app. As I teach the animals groups to my kindergarten class, I would love to see amphibians also included in this app. That is the only improvement I would like to see as I thought the animals facts were presented well in this app.
General review This app contains a wealth of knowledge as well as fun games and activities. My kindergarten class loved playing the various games. The animal piano section is adorable. The ability to save the pictures in the sticker section and paint section is a wonderful idea. This hour has hours and hours of enjoyment in it!

The Miracles of Jesus [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I like that this app has two different reading levels with the book being different at the two levels. I like the the illustrations that go along with the story. In the read and learn mode, the ability to tap on an unfamiliar word and have it spoken is a great feature.
Improvements I would like to see an option where the pages automatically turned for the child. In the tracing activity I would like to see more words included. I also think it would be beneficial to have the word stated after the tracing is completed. I also wish that in the letter tracing activity that the name of the letter would be stated ever before or later the letter was traced. This would add to the educational value of his app.
General review This is another great book app to teach about Jesus. The various activities have both spiritual and classroom educational value. This app is great to be used in a private or parochial school system to enhance the curriculum. It is well worth the price it is offered at.

Live Puzzle! Forest Animals [text]

Rating
What I liked I absolutely loved the moving animation in this app. This moving animation will not only entertain the children playing this app but I personally feel it helps with the completion of the puzzles at the harder levels. I also loved that the name of the animal in the puzzle is included upon completion.
Improvements I do not feel this app needs any improvement. I was very happy with this app as I have been with their other apps that I have tried. If I had to state one thing I might wish for it might be a timer to challenge the children to beat their own times for completion of the puzzles.
General review I was very impressed with this app. With the different levels this app would be suitable for both early preschoolers through early elementary aged students. I loved the inclusion of the final level with pieces that sometimes need flipped to complete the puzzle. This higher level thought process is a great educational value that is included in this app.

Magikid Train v1.7.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I appreciated that there were three speeds to choose from for completing the levels. I feel this allows the app to be used by different aged children. I liked that the graphics used varied throughout the levels. I liked the variety and range of skills covered with this app.
Improvements I wish that after completing a car correctly on the color and shape screens that the names would be stated. I feel this would add to the value of this app. I also wish there was oral positive feedback as the child completes the levels and oral encouragement when the incorrect answer was chosen.
General review As a kindergarten teacher I feel this app would be a great tool to use to work on visual discrimination. The use of "shadows" on the various levels was a great idea. I would recommend this app to other early education teachers as well as suggest it to parents.

Magical Music Box v1.15 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I was very impressed with the number of songs included in this app. The variety of songs included is a added advantage with this app. The ability to set the timer on this app is very handy. The chose between manual and automatic playing of the songs was another thing I liked about this app.
Improvements I would like to see a pause button on the app in the automatic play mode. If a pause button is not possible then a resume button for when you hit the stop button which I am sure many toddlers will do be accident. I would also like to see the music box scenes to also shuffle automatically.
General review The inclusion of the names of the songs makes this app not only a music box but also an educational app. The inclusion of the lyrics and background information on most of the songs is an added bonus. This app would be worth the cost of the app especially for families with toddlers.

Fraggle Rock Game Day [text]

Rating
What I liked I love the lesson behind this story. The interactive graphic add greatly to the story while also being very colorful and appealing to young children. The chooses of how to read the book allows the book to be suitable for children at different ability levels.
Improvements On the Alpha Suds game I would like to see an option to be able to turn the spelling of the word at the top of the screen. This would allow the children , if able to, to spell the words by themselves and build their confidence level. This is my only recommendation.
General review This is a great interactive book app. As an educator and parent also I love that the common core standards are included in this app. The Grown Ups Corner is a great resource for parents to be able to use with their child to be able to discuss the book.

Spellyfish - Short A Words (v1.0.0) [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I loved all the options that were available in the settings. With all these options the children can use this app many times with each time being a new learning experience. The options also allow this app to grow with the children using it. I love that more than one child's progress can be saved!
Improvements The voice sounds for the letter "q" does not appear to be correct. It is either not enunciated clearly or the incorrect sound has been entered as it sounds just like the /k/ sound that appears on both c and k. As a kindergarten teacher I feel the "l" sound is incorrect also. It sounds like /ol/ rather than simply the /l/ in isolation.
General review I absolutely love this app. It does an excellent job of covering the vowel "a". I like that it includes a variety of rhimes. I love that on the keyboard the vowels are in orange and the consonants are in blue to distinguish them. I like that an introduction lesson is included in this app. I feel this in very important when working with young students. I would love to see apps for the other vowels as well.

Tic Toc Time: Break down the day to learn how to tell time [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked As a teacher, I liked the lessons being taught in this app. I like that the child can not skip ahead but must complete each lesson before moving on. The background information on how people tell time is very informative. The hands on during each lesson allows the child to learn visually, verbally, and kineticly.
Improvements I was disappointed with the bump game at the end if the app. It could very easily frustrate a child as hitting the bump button exactly as the hand is on the number could be difficult due to sensitivity of individual iPads. I rarely hit it exactly even as an adult. And the correct hand placement is not displayed if the button is not hit at the correct time. A child is not given the correct answer just knows they may have been close.
General review I liked the hands on approach of teaching telling time through the lessons. However, I feel the application practice at the completion of the app needs some attention. I understand the concept of the voice of the beaver but as an educator I feel the children need to hear correct annunciation of the lessons.

Wubbzy's Puzzles [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I love that there are three different difficulty levels for each puzzle. This allows the app to appeal to children at differing abilities. I love the colorful pictures in the puzzles. This would be very appealing to the young children playing this app.
Improvements The large pop up to purchase the full version of the app after completion of the puzzle covers the puzzle. I understand trying to get people to purchase the full version but the size and location of the pop up would be very annoying to a young child completing the puzzles.
General review This is another great app with Wubbzy. I loved the interaction on the puzzles which would be very entertaining to young children. The variety of puzzles is a great asset with this app. The reading of the sentences upon completion is another asset of this app.

Math Mathews : Mental Math 1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked The four different levels makes this app well worth the cost. I liked that at the first levels you were given choices for the answer but at the higher levels you have to type in the correct answer. I also liked that addition and subtraction are intermixed at the higher levels also.
Improvements I turned the sound off while playing a round but as I replayed the music came back on. I would like to the option to completely turn the music off as I found it distracting. I also wish the dialogue was either read to the players or an option to turn it off also.
General review This app would be great for schools to use to differentiate instruction and practice for students at different levels. The price is also very reasonable. The abilities to enter different players is also a big benefit included in the app. I would highly recommend this app to other teachers to use in their classrooms.

Lola's Math Train FREE [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I loved the colorful animals included in this app, that would definitely appeal to the youngsters this app is designed for. The train sounds are also I plus which will thrill the young children using this app. The math skills covered at the easy level are very appropriate for the targeted age group.
Improvements I realize that this is the free version but I would like the app to be able to save where you leave off - keeping the earned animals until you can completely fill the train cars. That is my only suggestion as I was very impressed with the app as is designed.
General review I appreciate that a free version is available so that parents can see the app in action before deciding to possible purchase the full version. I feel this app would be a great addition to preschool and kindergarten curriculum in schools. Awesome app!

Jack and the Beanstalk a Mathematical Adventure - HD V1.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I liked the different types of mathematical problems that this app included. As an educator it was great to see different skills included in this app. I loved that although this is a math app it had the story of Jack and the beanstalk read to the children using this app. It shows the children how math is used in the real world.
Improvements Although I realize that you could choose to stay on a page and do multiple problems in the given skill, as an educator, I would like to see where the child would have to solve more than one problem to move on. Putting a "just practice" screen at the end would be a possibility. Another suggestion would be to include different levels of difficulty.
General review I liked the app but felt it needed more practice considering it is described as a mathematical adventure. The cost of the app is reasonable for the amount of activities involved. The app appears to be appropriate for the early elementary aged children.

A Day in the Zoo - 1.0.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked The sound effects were very realistic which I love! The variety of interactions on the different pages is nice. The ability to enable and disable the voices, sound effects, text, etc would come in very handy for parents of the toddlers using this app.
Improvements For the cost of this app I feel it could use some additional animals to make the price justified. I liked the "farm animals" but did not understand their inclusion in an app about zoo animals. Although there was a variety of interaction on the pages I felt some of the scenes could use more interactive activities.
General review The app is very appropriate for toddlers. The music and sound effects would captivate and hold the attention of the youngsters this app is designed for. The toddlers would find the interactions on the pages very entertaining. This app would hold the attention of the young people playing it.

Learn ABC Phonics v1.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I felt the parent section would be very beneficial for parents. I like that it suggestions on how to introduce the various letters to the young child using the app. The voice used in the app seems very appealing to a young child. I also liked that you can select which order to do the letters.
Improvements As an educator of kindergartners I did not like that the letters sounds were not totally accurate. The letters sounds for these letters (b, c, d, g, k, p, t, y) have an added "u" sound with them. For example "b" does not say /buh/. I feel if you are going to teach the sounds they need to be taught correctly.
General review I like that this app teaches the letter sounds as well as the formation of the lower case letters. I wish it had both lower case as well as capital letters. I found getting into the parent section very difficult as I had to do the 2 finger swipes many times to finally access this section.

Monsieur Bear's ABC [text]

Rating
What I liked I felt the illustration were very colorful. I liked the animation that went along with each picture as it was tapped on. I liked the idea that it was free with in app purchases until I discovered that it only included three of the twenty six letters of thge alphabet.
Improvements As an educator in the United States I was very disappointed with the sound that was given for the letter "a". I also did not like the inclusion of the "chairs" on the "c" page as it does not make the /Kuh/ sound but is a digraph with a different sound. As the free version only contains the 3 letters I can not include details for the rest of the alphabet.
General review I was rather disappointed with this app. It states it is #1 in the App Store in several countries. I was therefore expecting a great app but rather found an app that fail to appeal to me as an educator of kindergartners. The fact that it only includes 3 letters and requires the purchase of the other letters should be included in the description instead of the general in app purchase available.

Plume's School - Saving Christmas [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked As an educator of young students I liked that the app progressively gets more difficult as the individual levels are completed. The ability for parents to track their child's progress is also an asset in this app. The pictures chosen were very colorful and appealing for a young child.
Improvements On the bubble game the cheer after completing it correctly often is at same time as the next object is being stated and it is therefore hard to hear what the next object is. I found the sound quality very poor - almost as if in a can. There were large gaps in the spoken parts of the screen also.
General review I liked the concept of this app, but was disappointed with the sound. I felt the app should include more Christmas objects for the cost of the app. I am glad that a multi-user feature will be added as the app could then be used as a challenge for points between the different users.

Christmas Karaoke App: 12 Carols [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I liked that there was the option to have the vocals sung along with the song or to turn the vocals off. The option to be able to chose the background screen was nice. I also like the option of choosing between auto play and getting to chose the next song.
Improvements I felt that a couple of songs did not have the melody as the main music (Rudoph the Red Nose Reindeer in particular) which would make it difficult to sing along to without the vocals on. The addition of more songs would increase the value of this app.
General review Overall I was very pleased with the app. It appears to be a good value for the purchase price. This app appears to appeal to a large audience as it is suitable for all age groups. The app is suitable to be used both in homes as well as in schools as an educational app.

What I liked I did like the vocabulary words that the children would be exposed to. I liked that you could have a word repeated on the various screens. I appreciate that there were no in app purchases. But I am sorry to sat that is all the positive I can find with this app.
Improvements As a kindergarten teacher I feel the letter (spelling) is too difficult for the age this app is designed for. I would like to see link (matching) part of this app require the child to go from left to right as you do when reading. The letter (spelling) also should require the child to spell from left to right.
General review As a teacher of kindergartners I was not impressed by this app. The pictures were not overly appealing and am not sure they would appeal to youngsters. The app locked up on me and on the linking at that point had two of the same pictures and words and only one correct way to match them to be correct.

Kilubu : Magic Potions 1.0.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I appreciate that there are no in app purchases with this app. The app would definitely keep an user busy with all the different potions to be figured out. I like watching the character change after drinking the created potions. The unique ingredients would fascinate the youngsters creating the positions.
Improvements The app says it contains a parent section, however the only thing I found was 2 other apps by the same developer. I would like to see some sort of directions to guide the user. The directions could be included in an introduction that could be skipped once the directions are understood.
General review The app would definitely appeal to all the wizard fans out there. The ability to choose to follow the potion recipe book or to freely mix ingredients and discover what you have created make this app more appealing. The app also is suitable for a wide age range of users.
