Little House Decorator v1.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked I enjoyed Little House Decorator. I can definitely see little girl also enjoying this app because they are able to create their "dream house." Being able to decorator various rooms in the house was fun. This app definitely puts a new virtual spin on the old Polly Pocket games.
Improvements In the future version, I would like to see characters of all nationalities. This is to not leave any child or adult who may want to "envision" their decorated house creations. It would also be nice it had the feature where you could save a picture of the house in the camera roll once it is completed or weekly contest to see who decorated best or even seasonal objects (Christmas tree, pumpkins, etc.)
General review Little House Decorator was an enjoyable app especially for me as an adult reminiscing back to the Polly Pocket days. This app puts a virtual spin on decorating. It was enjoyable to go through all the objects to see was available and then start from the bottom floor and work your way up.

Animal Jigsaw Puzzle! v1.2 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked Animal Jigsaw Puzzle would be a great game for little children 4 and under. The puzzles are hands on and interactive. Children need to be able to see and hear animals and the sounds they make before they enter prekindergarten or at least first grade.
Improvements In addition to the animal sounds, I would love to actually hear the animals name being recited as well. This is so children can start embedding the visual, sound, and name of the animal. Also when the phone is on the silent it vibrates when the puzzle pieces are put in the correct place. At times this could be too much, maybe it can be silent by default and optional to turn the vibrate on.
General review Animal Jigsaw Puzzle was a fun interactive game to entertain and educate young children. It is important to start teaching children how to recognize animals by the physical characteristics as well as by their sound. This game provides them with both by visual and physical stimulation..

What I liked As a teacher, I loved this app, because reading is fundamental to learning. This app not only reads to the children, but allows the children to read. The interactive animated characters also keep the child's interest and engaged. The counting feature is a nice addition as well.
Improvements In the future version, I would like to see there be more time to play with the interactive animated characters. The page turns too quickly after the reader finishes the last sentence. As an adult I wanted more time to play so I am sure a child would also. Also, the sound for the interactive animated characters can sometimes be louder then the voice of the reader.
General review My general opinion of this app is that it keeps children engaged and motivated about reading. This is beneficial not only because it reads to the children but allows the child read the story themselves. The interactive animated characters bring the characters to life in a fun playful way.

SirMania - Play & Learn v1.1 [text] [video]

Rating
What I liked This app was very interactive which would be great for younger children. The characters are animated and interactive as well. Children pick up on technology quicker than every before. Counting numbers and being able to identify shapes and sizes is an important skill that students need to master in kindergarten/ 1st grade.
Improvements It is easy to get distracted during the games when you are able to click on the other animated characters while you are supposed to be counting worms. Maybe the other features could be deselected until the task is complete. Then you would be able to play the animations.
General review In my general opinion, this is a fun animated and educational app for young children in pre-K and Kindergarten. Counting objects as well identifying various shapes and sizes are an important skills that need to be mastered. The animated characters keep the kids motivated and engaged.

Lulu in the Amazon [text]

Rating
What I liked I liked the app Lulu in the Amazon, because it incorporates reading with animated fun features which motivates and engages students. Children will enjoy being able to tap on the animated characters and play games associated with the app. I liked that Lulu goes on different adventures experiencing different cultures.
Improvements In a future version, I would like to see the background features muted until after the initial story is read. It is easy get distracted and not finish listening to the story when you start tapping on some of the other features. Also, a reminder would be nice of what objects need to be selected to collect throughout the story.
General review Lulu in the Amazon is a fun educational and cultural app which incorporates reading with animated features. The app engages and motivates children to discover different cultural findings about the Amazon. There are also games inside of the main story which children can play.

Wubbzy's The Night Before Christmas [text]

Rating
What I liked I liked the app, because it put a spin a familiar Christmas story. It was an enjoyable story with funny named characters that grabbed your attention. Great idea including the two versions 'read to me' and 'read and play.' The app will definitely catch young children's attention with the background animations and characters.
Improvements I would like to see improved in a future version is in the 'read to me' feature that the background animations be muted. I could see now a young child could be distracted and not listen to the story. Also, maybe if the story could be read the whole way through first then you would be able to go back to play with the animations.
General review My general opinion about this app is that it will put a new spin on a familiar Christmas story for younger children to enjoy. They will be able to read or follow along with Wubbzy, Santa, and the reindeer. The interactive features make this app even more fun and engaging!

Creativium - Paper Theater [text]

Rating
What I liked I liked that app because it had colorful and engaged animations. Also, I thought the ability to slide the scenes to additional pictures and characters was enjoyable. I can definitely see how a small child will have tons of fun pressing the characters to see what surprising moves they will make. Also, the addition of being able to shake the iPad and move items was fun.
Improvements The animations are fun and engaging but as an educator, I would like to see a feature added to where a child or parent could record their voices and their animations for story and a playback/ save button. This will allow them to keep their memories saved.
General review This app is creative, fun, and engaging for small children. Being able to slide the scenes, see and play with additional characters and animations was a nice surprise. I would like to see a feature added where either the parent or child can add their voices and record their movements on the scene.

Rating
What I liked I liked this app because it reads to the child and it highlights the words as it says the words wheich is extremely helpful for beginning readers. I also thought the animations are very engaging. Also, the game mode and the story mode is a great addition.
Improvements On a future version, I would like to see a feature to where the child can read aloud to the highlighted words and record themselves. Also a play back feature would be nice too. Not only will the app by entertaining but educational as well. I could me using this app in my elementary classroom.
General review My general opinion about this app would be it would be a great app for any child to listen to, follow along with, and read aloud with. The animated characters were a tons of tons to play with. Also I really enjoyed that the game mode was separate from the story.

Word Crush Mania v1.1 [text] [video]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I enjoyed this app because it reminded of a brain teaser type of game. It made me quickly think of words and my placement of letter tiles. I could see this being used in an education setting by having students use phonemic awareness to create words.
Improvements In the future version, I could a short video tutorial being added in the beginning with directions. I say this for younger children who may not be read fluently yet. Also, I was unaware of the missions/ goals I had to complete until after the first activity ended. Make the missions.
/goals immediately pop up from the beginning so players know work to work toward.
General review The app, Word Crush Mania, was a fun and brain teasing game that made me quickly think of words to create and the decision to put letter tiles in certain places. The timer added the "rush" factor that made me work and think faster than usual. I can't wait to beat my score next time I play.

Wubbzy and The Princess [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I liked this app because it is extremely interactive. From the read aloud pages to the coloring sheets, a child will be fully engaged in the story of Wubbzy and the Princess. Also, the videos and games were a great addition as well. The interactive animated characters make the story come to life.
Improvements In a future version I would like to see on the coloring sheet feature when choosing the brush it is hard to choose the color brown on the far right side because it is covered by the eraser button. It would be nice to have all colors made easily available.
General review In general this app Wubbzy and Princess is an exciting, educational, and fun app for children who are enthusiastic about reading. This app offers read along text as well independent reading, animated videos, coloring pages, and games. It has it everything a parent or a teacher needs to engage theirs child in reading.

Sparky's Birthday Surprise [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I liked various aspects of this app. First of all I enjoyed the stars that prompted the child on what part of the picture to touch to see the animated characters. Also, I enjoyed the video as well as the math addition practice in addition to the reading.
Improvements If I could see improvements in the future version, I would like to see maybe all the same great features but in spanish for bilingual students to also interact with the app. Also on the coloring pages feature, having more of a range of colors to select would be great as well.
General review Overall, I believe this app is fantastic. From the read to me, read and play features, videos, games, and coloring pages, this app offers children with a great theme for the month of October of fire safety to help teach kids about fire saftey prevention. My students are going to love this app.

Monsieur Bear's ABC [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I really enjoyed this app Monsieur Bear's ABC because it provides colorful animated illustrations for each letter of the alphabet as well as the sound of that letter which extremely important in in early childhood settings. The illustration are interactive as well as comes in Spanish.
Improvements In a future version/ wish list, I would like to see some sentences incorporated with some the words used for that letter of the alphabet. That would extend the app to kindergarten where they learn the sounds but also use words in the correct context.
General review In my general opinion, this app Monsieur Bear's ABC is great for children in either homeschool or early childhood settings. It not only gives the sounds of the letter but gives them an interactive illustration for the letter. I know kids will love the hands on learning.

Christmas Karaoke App: 12 Carols [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I really enjoyed this app. It really put me in the Christmas mood as well as served as a game for a holiday party. Everyone read and sang along to the words. We even hooked the iPod to a sound bar to maximize the sound. This app was a great addition to my holiday party.
Improvements An improvement I'd like to see in a future version would the words that also come in black as opposed to the white letter. It was slightly difficult to see with the lights on and when applying the colored backgrounds. Also, maybe even add some contemporary holidays songs.
General review In my general opinion, this app is fantastic for holiday get togetherness or parties. I played this app with friends and family members. We turned the vocal feature off and all joined in. The variety of songs provided gave everyone the opportunity to bring the holidays in.
