PrestoBingo Shapes v1.4 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This is a very high quality app that has great artwork. There is a good description of each shape as well as different examples of what can be made with the shapes. As each shape is found the app counts along both verbally in a child's voice and by showing the number. Teaching shapes and counting together is a great combination.
Improvements I think that this is a great app for young children but here are a few things that would make it better. The main thing that I think would make the biggest difference is showing the total amount of shapes there are to find in each picture. Just saying there are more shapes to find can be frustrating to kids. The other thing that would make this app better would be to add a few more puzzles. It does seem like it should have more content for the price of the app.
General review In general this is a very high quality app that provides a positive learning experience for my daughter and I feel good about her using it. She does get a little frustrated when she has trouble finding all of the shapes and we don't know how many are left. Since this is a $2.00 app it would be nice if there was more content. These issues are very minor but I think it is the difference between 4 and 5 stars.

Preschool Kitty 1.4 [text]

What I liked This app is a very good value for .99. It has many different learning activities for young children. The illustrations are very cartoonish and appropriate for this age group. My daughter and I really like the upbeat music. In the settings you are able to select which puzzles you want and the skill level your child is at so you can increase the difficulty as your child learns. The statistics page is a great way to keep track of what your child is learning and what they need help with.
Improvements Although I really like the settings to choose which activities you want and the skill level, this feature does not seem to work correctly. When I make the selections it still allows the puzzles and skill levels that I did not select. My daughter gets confused with the prizes in the bedroom, she keeps thinking this is another puzzle and it frustrates her. Between the bedroom and the activities she is not ready for yet, she gets frustrated and refuses to play after a short time. I think if these two things were improved the app would be much more useful for her.
General review This is a fun app with many different learning activities and puzzles for young children. The music and illustrations are perfect for this age group. You are able to check your child's progress with detailed statistics. There is a feature to adjust the difficulty and allow only the activities you want your child to work on but the settings feature doesn't seem to work correctly at this time. Overall this app is an excellent value for the price.

JigSaw Zoo Animal Puzzles - Animated Puzzle Fun for Kids with Funny Cartoon Animals! [text]

Rating
What I liked I think this is a very good puzzle game for kids. My daughter really likes the cute cartoon after finishing the puzzle as a reward. I really appreciate the different skill levels to appeal to a wider age range of kids and allow for growth. There is a timer to see how long it takes to solve the puzzle and you can turn the shadow hints on or off.
Improvements The puzzle pieces tend to clutter up the board. I think that if there were a spot to put the pieces outside of the board it would make the puzzles much more enjoyable. The amount of puzzles was a good value for .99 but with a higher price I think there should either be more puzzles or some extra activities.
General review This is a very fun puzzle game that my daughter enjoys playing. She really likes the fun cartoons at the end of the puzzles. Each puzzle has different difficulty settings to appeal to older children and so your child can advance their skills. The board can get kind of cluttered with the more difficult settings so it would be nice if there was a better place to put the pieces. Overall this is a really good kids app.

OnceUponAnApp's Twas the Night Before Halloween [text]

What I liked This is a very fun and interactive story that is perfect for young children. The artwork and sound effects are very well done and my daughter enjoys playing with all of the different hidden objects. There are extra activities in addition to the story which help make this app a bargain for .99. There are no up sells or ads and it is nice to be able to turn the music and narration off and on.
Improvements I think that the organization of the app could be improved. I don't like the fact that I have to go through the entire story each time in order to get to the activities. Putting everything on the home screen would help even if the activities had to be "unlocked" the first time. The navigation tool on the bottom covers up some of the words even when it is minimized. Sometimes it gets stuck on a page and won't let you continue without starting over.
General review This app is a fun Halloween story that is an excellent value with lots of bonus activities. It makes a nice sugar free Halloween treat. My daughter really likes trying to find all of the hidden interactive objects while she listens to the story. The sound effects and artwork are excellent but the navigation could be a little better.

Professor Chomp v1.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked I like that there are no ads or upgrades. The game is appropriate for children, the music is pleasant, and the characters are cute. The gameplay is very simple and easy to understand. I liked the fire hydrant experiment, Professor Chomp has a sense of humor.
Improvements This app seems to be missing something. The game is not very interesting or engaging, my 5 year old daughter did not want to play for more that a few minutes. I think that adding characters and achievements to the actual game would help significantly. It could benefit from a simple story as well. The price was very high for the game, I think it would be better at a lower price.
General review This game could be better. It is appropriate for children and it is very simple but it is not very exciting or engaging. The game is very basic and I think it could use some more action and characters to make it more interesting. Adding levels and achievements would be helpful because at this time there doesn't seem to be any. I think it has the potential to be really good but right now it feels like it is missing something.

Playground HD1 - 12 games for kids aged 2-6 in 1 App v3.0.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked This is an excellent kid's app with a very good variety of educational games for young children. My daughter enjoys many of the games and it is convenient to have them all in the same app. The thing that stuck out to me the most is the Piano with the adorable voices and the customization options. I like the timer feature which keeps track of how long she uses the app so I don't have to. The delay for the settings is one of the better childproof buttons that I have seen.
Improvements The price might be a little high for some people and lowering it could bring more customers. I thought that the Colors game was a little too difficult, it would probably be much better if it were a little less challenging. With the games that start easy and get progressively harder such as Remember it would be nice to be able to continue where you left off instead of having to start over each time. In the Find It game the pictures don't always line up correctly with iPhone. At the end of the Collect game the app just freezes up and you have to restart.
General review This app is full of fun and educational games for young children of various skill levels. My 5 year old really likes many of the games but some are a little too challenging for her. There is a timer so you don't need to keep track of how long your child uses the app. The piano in this app is the best, the sounds are very cute and you can customize it in several different ways. The app is a little steep but it is worth it.

Playground HD2 - Smart Kids Edition v2.0.0 [text]

What I liked I like the variety of games in this app. TICTACTOE and CONNECT 4 are both games that I enjoyed as a child and it fun to introduce them to my daughter. It is nice that these games have the option of playing two players so parents can play them with their children. I love the number games especially the one that gives instructions about how to draw.
Improvements There seems to be a pretty major bug while using my iPhone 4 with iOS 6.0.1. Each time I try to go to the settings all I can find is a blank blue page. Exiting the app and starting it again brings me back to the blank page. In order to get back into the app I need to completely end the session. Sometimes the tiles get stuck in the two NUMBERS games with tiles and the app has to be restarted. The fish game seems really hard for children. Some optional hints for the younger players would be nice.
General review This app has some very fun and educational games. My daughter and I really like to play the two player games together that I used to play as a kid. There are some excellent educational numbers games as well. I especially like the game that teaches children how to actually draw the numbers. I have not been able to use the timer function on iPhone due to a bug. Overall I think this app is a good value.

What I liked This is a kid's app with high quality graphics and fun music. I like the idea of teaching children words by using puzzles. Once the puzzles are solved the items are put on the first screen and can be accessed at any time. The app switches between day and night with different visual and sound effects. The snow is a nice touch.
Improvements I think this app is somewhat confusing for children. On the initial screen with the house there is no explanation of how to start the game. It would be nice if there were some instructions or better symbols. The game play is also pretty confusing; my daughter does not seem to really engage with it enough to enjoy playing the game. The timer seems really fast for this age group. It would be nice to be able to close the pop up that says "HOORAY!" after a word has been solved, it seems to last too long. The narrator has an accent that sometimes makes the words sound different than they are.
General review Although this app has very good quality graphics and music the actual game is somewhat confusing and my daughter does not really enjoy it as much as other word learning games. I think the idea of using puzzles to teach words is a good one but it could be implemented in a better way. The accent of the narrator might somet cause confusion with the pronunciation for children who are learning the words.

Claustrophobic, v1.1 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I can definitely see the reason why it is called Claustrophobic, the concept of a shrinking play area is interesting. This game has a somewhat unique style of game play. I like the fact that all in app purchases are available for free if you are able to earn them. There is a variety of power ups and I like how the ball looks.
Improvements I was pretty disappointed by the game since it is advertised as an "endless runner" which is one of my personal favorite genres. I expected it to be more of an action oriented obstacle course rather than just moving the ball back and forth in a confined area. Not calling it an endless runner would probably prevent people from having these expectations. The game is pretty repetitive and doesn't really change from level to level. It would be nice to see more variety beyond just different power ups. Different achievements besides just scoring points might help make the game more interesting.
General review This game does not seem at all like an endless runner type game to me. Instead it is more of like a balancing game where you move a ball back and forth trying to stay in a confined area that gets smaller from the beginning to end of each level. I found that the game gets boring pretty quickly since there is no real difference between levels except different power ups and the speed that the area shrinks.

Wubbzy's Fire Engine Adventure [text]

What I liked This is an excellent educational kid's app with a fun interactive story. In addition to the story there are many different activities. The songs are and catchy and the coloring game is much better without having to worry about staying in the lines. It's great that all of the links are childproof. This is the first app that I have seen that is designed to help prepare children for the Common Core Standards.
Improvements It might be nice to have an advanced mode in the games to allow random letters and numbers. At the end of both games there is a blank green box, one time it said "watch what happens next" but nothing happened. The game endings could be better or the games could be restarted from the end screen. The games and videos tabs might look a little bit better if they were full or re-sized to fit the content. It would be good to be able to access the fire safety page from the home screen. More interactive surprises in the story and auto advancement in the "read to me" mode would be good.
General review I really like this app, it is a well-made educational children's app that is a good value. It has a cute story that is fun and interactive. There are plenty of different bonus activities like painting, a counting game, and an alphabet game. There are some very fun sing along videos and I especially like the lock on all of the links they have that asks for the year you were born before you can proceed.

Fire Station 1.0 [text]

What I liked I really like the interactive cartoon illustrations and relaxing upbeat music in this app. Moving between cartoon and live action videos is fun and it has a classic Sesame Street feel to it. The videos are short enough to keep kids engaged but long enough to be very educational. I definitely appreciate the lack of ads and in app purchases.
Improvements I would like to see more content; the app seems a little short for the cost. Expanding the town would be great. I think it would be good to have some sort of indication of where the videos actually are, maybe a sign or some sort of animation. It would be really good if there was at least one additional game or activity that did not involve watching videos. A home fire safety area with more in depth tips would be nice to see.
General review This is a very fun educational app for learning about fire stations, firefighters, ambulances, and more. Switching between live action and a cartoon is great for kids. My daughter enjoys trying to find all of the hidden illustrations and videos. This app is well made but I feel like the content is a little bit thin for the price right now, I hope that it gets much bigger. The absence of in app purchases and ads is great for a kid's app.

CoverMe - Private Texting & Secure Phone Calls with Password Locked Safe Vault to Protect Secret Contacts, Text Messages, Personal Photos & Videos - V1.0.2 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This app is the most complete phone security app that I have seen. I like the fact that you can use it to encrypt phone calls, texts, and hide sensitive data. Most photo vaults do not include the ability to hide videos but this one does. I really like the unlimited decoy accounts and the self destructing messages. There are no ads or in app purchases but the app is still free.
Improvements The TOS is really long and complicated. Generally if an app has a really long privacy policy or TOS full of legal language that I don't understand I tend to avoid it. I would always prefer to have a very simple and straightforward TOS that is easy to read. I don't like the fact that if the phone is stolen or the app gets deleted for any reason that there is no way to recover any of the data. It would be great to be able to save a password protected copy of the file on my PC.
General review This is the best value I have seen for this type of app. I don't really have anyone in particular to hide anything from but for general security this app is amazing. I really like the fact that I can encrypt my phone calls, encrypt my texts, and hide anything that I don't want anyone else to see all in one free app. The biggest downside is that if your phone is stolen or the app is deleted you will lose all of your saved information.

What I liked This app is pretty awesome for both adults and children. I like the fact that it does not really feel like an educational app but it clearly is. The difficulty seems just about right, it can be a little bit annoying if you miss one and have it locked but not enough to be discouraging. The ability to unlock new levels by getting achievements is the perfect rewards system for this game.
Improvements I would really like to see a separate button to turn off the phone vibration because it is way too distracting, I finally figured out that it was included with the mute button but it cannot be turned off separately. It should remind us that you can move two diagrams at a time when the hint button is pushed; it took me a while to understand this feature. The tutorial is a little confusing and I found a typo. Where the note says "Answer = 0/2" there is only 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 to choose from.
General review I generally don't enjoy math very much but this a very fun and unique math game that appeals to children and adults. Once I start playing it's pretty difficult to put down. It is a perfect balance between an educational app and a fun game. It is challenging enough to keep it fun and interesting but not so much that it keeps you from wanting to play it.

Wubbzy's Animal Coloring Book [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked There is a wide variety of options for colors and tools to color with in this app. There are also some stickers to put on the paintings. It is nice to have the ability to use paint to automatically fill in all of the space between the lines while at the same time have the option to use spray paint or a brush to be able to draw more precisely, this is helpful for children who are learning to color. The zoom feature makes it easier to paint exactly where you want. The child proof lock that asks for a date of birth is great.
Improvements Although this is a coloring book app and a very good one, I would like to have some activities included in this app that are not related to coloring like some games or videos. It would also be nice to have some music or more sounds while coloring. I like the undo button but I would prefer to have a better eraser to be able to change things later, the current eraser does not seem to do this very well. The app sometimes freezes when I open it right after it goes through the credits. The tutorial comes on each time the app is opened; a setting to disable it after the first time would be helpful.
General review We really enjoy Wubbzy at my house. This is an excellent coloring book app with a huge variety of different colors to choose from. There are several different types of tools to paint with including chalk, spray paint, and paint brushes. My daughter especially likes the stickers. This app is really good but it would be nice to see some extra activities in addition to coloring.

Wubbzy and The Princess [text]

What I liked This is a very cute interactive story that is just the right length for young children with three different modes available and plenty of hidden surprises throughout the story. The app remembers your page if you leave the story. Lots of bonus activities make this app a great value including several games, music videos, and a coloring book full of features. There are no ads or upgrades and all of the outbound links are protected by age verification.
Improvements The app sometimes freezes or slows down considerably when the home button is pressed in the coloring book which requires the session to be ended in order to continue. It would be nice to be able to disable the tutorial in the coloring book after seeing it the first time. In the Read To Me mode the pages take a while to turn, speeding it up without removing anything would make it more enjoyable. It can be slow to respond sometimes when you press the button that says "Great Job!!! See What Happens Next" after winning a game.
General review This is one of the best Wubbzy apps that I have tried. The story is fun and it is the perfect length for my daughter's attention span plus it has lots of hidden objects on each page to find. There are a generous amount of bonus activities including games and a coloring book. It is a little slow to turn the pages in Read To Me mode but it's not too bad considering how much is going on there.

Sound Tap Quiz 1.0.5 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I like how simple and easy to use this app is. It is fun and engaging for my 6 year old daughter and it helps us to practice her speech at home. Most of the objects and animals are familiar but there are some that are unique and new for her. I especially like how child friendly the app is with no upgrades, ads, or links.
Improvements Most of the sounds are very easy to recognize but there are a few that don't seem to match very well. Since there are multiple sounds for each object, I would like to have settings to choose which sounds to use for the quiz. It would also be nice to be able to pick and choose which categories or objects to quiz on instead of just the default mixes. With an app like this it is always good to see more content in future releases.
General review I have a 6 year old daughter that attends speech therapy multiple times per week. I found this app to be extremely useful at practicing speech at home since she really enjoys listening to the sounds and telling me what made them. Not all of the sounds seem to match the objects perfectly but there are several different sounds to choose from for each object. This app was very well designed for children and has no upgrades or ads.

Wubbzy's 123 Learn & Play [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This app is a fun way for children to practice counting. The tracing is a very good way to reinforce learning numbers, there are several vehicles you can choose from to trace with including a race car and a train. There is a huge coloring book section where you can color on scenes with numbers it has different brushes, paints, chalk, and stickers . There are 5 different counting games and 3 bonus videos.
Improvements I would like to see the tracing go up to at least 20. It is important to be able to count to 10 and get a firm understanding of those numbers but by 5 or 6 years old most children should be able to count higher. Sometimes it seems like the app does not respond to my finger properly when I am trying to trace so I have to try a few times, I think that could be somewhat frustrating to children.
General review Like all of the Wubbzy apps my daughter and I have tried so far this is app is both fun and educational. The tracing game is very fun but it would be nice if it was expanded beyond 1-10. Overall this app is a very good value for the money. There is a really good coloring book and many bonuses including 3 videos and 5 counting games.

Fraggle Rock Game Day [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked Fraggle Rock is one of my favorite kid's shows ever. This storybook is a fun introduction to Fraggle Rock for younger children. The hints about some of the more important hidden objects are nice. The games are excellent for teaching letters, numbers, and shapes. I like that the counting game goes up to twenty. The game narrator is very clear and easy to understand. There is a coloring book that really good with a large variety of colors to use. You can paint with or without a brush, draw, use chalk, or splatter. There are no annoying ads or upgrades and all of the links are protected.
Improvements I would like to see some Fraggle Rock videos, music videos or even some of the clips of Uncle Traveling Matt in outer space. More of these excellent educational games would be great. The page where Red eats the Doozer construction takes more patience than most kids this age have, it might be better if the complete animation happened after one touch.
General review Fraggle Rock was one of my favorite shows as a child and this interactive storybook app was a good way to introduce it to my 6 year old daughter. Unlike the Fraggle Rock show which I think can appeal to all ages, this app was made specifically for preschool and kindergarten age children. There are no ads or unprotected links. In addition to the main storybook there are also some excellent games and a coloring book that is full of features.

Tic Toc Time: Break down the day to learn how to tell time [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This is an exceptional kid's app with a very large amount of detailed information about telling time, using a compass, and the positions of the sun. The beavers are cute and likeable and I think the music is catchy while at the same time not annoying to parents even after hearing it over and over. The games are both fun and educational at the same time. I felt like I learned something from this app while teaching my daughter. I like that there are no ads or in app purchases.
Improvements The biggest thing that I see is loading times, it would be much better if they could be reduced or eliminated. Sometimes the app gets stuck loading and the session has to be closed. I did notice some typos on the about page. I did not like having to sign up in order to access all of the features, at the very least it would be nice to be told beforehand about the requirement to sign up to use the garden. The clock hands are impossible to turn or stop precisely. It is very easy to accidentally skip important information by touching the screen while the beaver is talking.
General review Overall, I think this is a great app for children to learn about telling time and it will only get better. I was impressed by the level of detail this app has. I wish I had something like this available when I was learning to tell time and I am happy to be able to have my daughter use it. I do think it will be much better if some improvements are made with the loading times and some of the touch screen settings.

Wubbzy's Puzzles [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This is an excellent introduction to Wubbzy apps and a great value as a free app. There are plenty of puzzles to solve and they all have three difficulty levels. Putting the story as a reward for solving the puzzles is a good reward system. I like the parent section and the free educational downloads. The child lock preventing children from accessing outbound links in this app and all Cupcake Digital apps is my favorite of all of them I have seen.
Improvements I would like see a setting that allows the removal of the background from the puzzles so they can be made more challenging for advanced puzzle players. It seems excessive to put an ad on each page for the full version, it would be better either on the main page or at the end. The picture that has the sparkles on the main page, which is a link to more apps, seems like it would be better without the sparkles that entice children into an area they can't access without help. It might be worthwhile to provide a game or video to show a preview of what is available in the paid Wubbzy apps.
General review My daughter is really starting to enjoy more difficult puzzles and this Wubbzy app provides some really good ones. There are multiple difficulty settings for each puzzle so you can ease into more advanced puzzles. The child lock is great and there is a download section in the parent's area with lots of free educational activities that meet the common core standards. Nice app but I would prefer not to see an ad for the full version on each page.

Sparky's Birthday Surprise [text]

Rating
What I liked This is a really good interactive story that teaches about fire safety. It is nice to have a full featured educational Cupcake Digital app that is free. There are plenty of hidden objects to play with and find during the story. The games are both fun and educational in teaching about shapes and early math, I especially liked the Sparky Addition game.
Improvements I was a little confused at first on the page where the window is pushed and the scene actually goes outside. That would probably be better either at a door or with a scene that is obviously just looking out the window. It would be nice to see more videos since it looks a little bit empty in that tab. I did experience an excessive lag in the coloring book sometimes when I tried to exit to the main menu.
General review This app is a great value since it is free but it is still as functional and feature rich as many good paid apps. It is also a perfect introduction to Cupcake Digital. The focus on fire safety is definitely important to me as a parent of a small child. Having fun but educational games and a full featured coloring book is icing on the cake.

Monsieur Bear's ABC [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked This app could be helpful for learning letters and words. There are several unique words and animated pictures for each letter. The narrator says the corresponding words for each letter very clearly. I like that there is a child lock that protects the outbound links and I did not see any ads.
Improvements There are only three letters available in the alphabet when I click any of the letters that are not currently available there is a child lock but nothing happens after choosing the correct answer. There should be an upgrade option available or the full alphabet should be available without an upgrade. The parent's area cursive font is very difficult to read on the iPhone, it would be easier if it was larger. The child lock is nice but since it is a multiple choice question it could easily be breached by accident.
General review I'm pretty confused about the fact that this is a trial version with an upgrade available but there does not seem to be a way to upgrade within the app. My daughter enjoyed the first three letters but she probably would have engaged longer with more of the alphabet. The app is well designed and appropriate for young children who are learning to read. I think this app seems really limited at this time; I hope it has more to offer in the future.

Hide & Seek: Fun With Animals (v1) [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I like the high quality cartoon look and feel of this app. My daughter enjoys looking for the different animals. The hints are helpful enough to give an idea where to look for the hidden animal but not so much that it is too easy. Balloon popping is a good reward for finishing the levels.
Improvements Sometimes it seems like the individual animals are not sensitive enough to touch or the area that needs to be touched is too small which can be frustrating when the correct animal needs to be touched multiple times. The hide and seek game is great but I would like to see some added activities. The characters would be good in videos or additional educational games. It might be helpful to add the name of the animal that the child is looking for to reinforce learning the words.
General review This is a unique children’s hide and seek game that is well-made. The cartoon illustrations and narration are very good. There are no ads or upgrades and the lock on the parent's area is pretty effective. There is only 3 levels of hide and seek and no other activities so it would be nice to see more stuff added in the future.

Princess and Knight [text]

Rating
What I liked This is a fun learning tool for young children. The middle ages theme is pretty unique and teaches words that are unlikely to be found in other educational apps. I like that the levels have to be unlocked in order to progress. There is a variety of educational games and the price is very good for a children's app that has no ads or upgrades.
Improvements I thought many of the levels seemed to be redundant. It would be nice to have the content change more from level to level. It seems like there are a lot of bugs in this app. There is a persistent freezing bug on the quiz that is the 6th level. The quiz games frequently cut off the narrator from saying the word of the item that is being found making it impossible to know what the item is the child is looking for in higher levels. I was stuck on the link activity which is on the 36th level; it would not acknowledge correct answers until I closed the session and started over.
General review This is a unique educational app; I like the unique concept and the theme. I think there are a lot of bugs for a live app and many of the levels are too similar too each other. This would be a pretty solid app and a good value if more content was added and some of the bugs were fixed.

Sailing Home – Learn Animal Habitats.Version 1.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked This is a cute and educational children's app. I really like the animation style and the narrator sounds just like Adam West. It is appropriate for young children; there are no ads, upgrades, or unprotected links. There is plenty of information included to learn about each animal. My daughter enjoys popping the balloons.
Improvements The game play seems like it could be improved so that you can pick up more animals as you are playing instead of having to start over. It would be nice to be able to choose which animals to take instead of having random and frequently overlapping animals chosen for you. My daughter's favorite animal right now is the giraffe; she was disappointed that they were not included. Some of the habitats look similar to each other; it might be helpful to make them more unique looking. There seem to be a lot of redundant animations; it would be nice to have a skip feature after the first viewing.
General review This is a good quality app for young children to learn more about some of their favorite animals. It would be nice to see more animals featured in the app. There are some improvements that could be made to make it more fun to play but it is definitely a solid educational app.
