Screen Time - Media Time Manager [text]

Rating
What I liked This app has nice clean graphics. It was easy to add and delete multiple children to the app.. There is a wide variety in the preset lists for screens, tasks and rewards in the set up section which I liked and it was easy to add my own items to the lists.
Improvements I tried to reduce time for one of my children to 15 minutes for screen time and it added more time to the one hour I had already allotted. It would be helpful to have a section in set up with more details as far as adding and taking away time to the screen time, tasks and rewards. I am not a big fan of the redeem section using external sites to post to.  There should be a section in the app to check and see what was redeemed and for what.
General review I think this app is a nice way to keep track of how long your kids have to do their tasks or be on the computer. I think the redeem section is a great way to teach kids how to manage their time and money. Overall, I think it is a great app to manage tasks/time and rewards for kids.

What I liked Easy to use on the iphone I liked the categories that were already in the app and that you can add subcategories in them. I also liked the recurring payments, although I would like to pick the due date instead of use the date i entered the bill. The reports are easy to read.
Improvements I think the information bubble needs to be brighter, using a different color for the text would help. There are a couple words that are misspelled incomings should be income and incomes should be singular in the expense/income bar. Also Interests should be interest.
General review Great app for keeping track of your budget. I like that I could easily input expenses into categories and add subcategories/line items in them. There is also a notes section in the category so you can note the specifics of the transaction, which i find to be very useful when looking back at a transaction.

Tap Times Tables - Multiplication fun [text]

What I liked I liked the graphics and music. I think the different sections are great for the kids to choose from. I think the message that pops up at the top of the screen is helpful. I think the section with the cap is great for kids just learning the times tables.
Improvements I had a hard time understanding the scoring system of the game. Seemed to jump quite a bit. Back button is needed on the credit section. Multiplayer mode would be great to keep track of scores. I think there needs to be some kind of reward for answering the quiz right. I am not sure what the star and arrow are in the settings screen, and also the game center took a long time to load. Not sure where the results are listed.
General review My daughter liked the music and graphics. She also liked how the numbers were in bubbles. I liked the info blurb that pops up with helpful tips while playing this app. The different options are nice to choose from for beginners, intermediate and advanced users.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Factory: Place Value (v1.0) [text]

What I liked Nice graphics and clean design. Great for Kids learning to count on up. The introduction section gave a nice summary of the game. I think the three different conveyer belts with cookies was a great tool for counting. Kids could amount by ones or tens easily. I really like the fact that there are no in app purchases or ads.
Improvements I think the how to play section should be a menu item instead of in the game where the game is being played. Also, when the game is being played I think for kids playing the game they might not always look at the order or count or get confused. I found it hard to know what the count was. I think it would be helpful to have a number pop up after you hit the cookie (s).
General review Great app for kids learning how to count. Nice graphics and instructions on how to play. The story at the beginning has good tips on how to play. It's nice that there is a multi player mode. The sales records area gives a nice summary of the results for the game(s) played.

Animal Puzzle for Kids and Toddlers [text]

What I liked I played this with my 5 year old and he really enjoyed the game. We liked the graphics, its very cute and the sound effect that it makes when you put the animal in its spot. He liked popping the balloons game after he correctly completed the puzzle.

Improvements I would like to see more difficult puzzles for kids. I did not like the fact that there is an in app purchase to unlock puzzles. I think the puzzles should unlock after you get so many correct. The in app purchase should be harder for kids to do like they way they do the exit button and make the user drag the button from the right side all the way to the left side to prevent accidental click
General review Great puzzle app for young children 2- preschool age. The app was very easy for my 5 year old. I wasn't very happy with the in app purchase to unlock more puzzles. I think more puzzles should unlock in increments. My son liked playing the app and liked popping the balloons after completing the puzzle.

Trains Story Puzzles - The Little Engine Who Saved the Carnival! [text]

What I liked I played this with my 5 year old who loves puzzles and he liked the puzzles. Although, after he went through 10 of the puzzles he lost interest in the app. The storyline had a nice message for kids, that you can do anything you put your mind to and to help others.
Improvements I think the narration in the beginning of the movie/ game should be slower. It was somewhat hard to understand what the train was saying. When you place the puzzles pieces in the wrong spot there should be a sound letting the player know it's wrong. There should also be a way to get out of the app, instead of hitting the home button in the device to end the game.
General review Overall, for my kids ages 7 and 5 the puzzles were very easy. I think having more variety in difficulty would help keep kids interest. The movie was cute and a great way to convey the message that anything is possible as long as you try your best, even when others won't help you.

What I liked I read this with my 5 and 7 year old, we all liked the story. They also liked the sound effects when you touched the people or the clouds in the story. I like that the story has three options for the person to choose from, this is especially good for kids just learning to read.
Improvements In the read to me mode I think the arrows should blink or something so the person reading the story knows to hit the arrow to turn the page. Although my kids and i really liked the interactive activities on each page, I found that it can be distracting and I found my kids stuck on the same page because of it.
General review I read this with my 5 and 7 year old children. We all liked the story, the characters and their expressions. They also liked the interactive activities on each page. I liked what the story was about, my 7 year old understood the message and was able to reiterate it to me.

Math Guardians 1.5 [text]

What I liked I played this with my 7 year old and she liked the game in the first level. I liked the detailed instructions and found them to be helpful in defeating the creature during battle. The graphics and effects are nice, I like that there is an option to turn it off.
Improvements I played this with my 7 year old and she became frustrated with the game after the first level. She was very distracted by the Rat fighting with the Rabbit. I do not like that you can post to Facebook from the app. There needs to be a back arrow in the game screen, so you can end the game. i
General review I played this with my 7 year old and I liked how the problems vary between addition and subtraction after the first level is passed. Nice detailed pictures and instructions on how to play the game. I liked that negative numbers were included in the app. Great app to play while reviewing math.

Felt Board 1.1 [text]

What I liked I liked the instructions and found them to be useful in playing the app. I liked all the different selections for children to make their own picture into a story. My children both played it and my 7 year old liked dressing up the girls with all sorts of dresses and accessories with different back rounds and flowers.
Improvements My 5 year old didn't understand how to clear the items off the screen, and kept trying to get rid of the item and ended up with a jumbled mess. My 7 year old said that it took awhile for her to get rid of unwanted items. I would like to see a button or arrow to go back to the home screen or beginning of the app, to start a new picture. Also, when trying to delete multiple items in a stack it would be nice to be able to select the whole thing. I tried to use glue and then drag to the bin, but it didn't work.
General review I played this app with my 5 and 7 year old, we really liked the app. My kids and I played for quite awhile making different pictures and had fun making up stories to go along with the pictures about the people, animals, buildings, weather and plants. We had fun using our imaginations.

What I liked My kids played this app before school today and didn't want to put it down. They had so much fun making snowmen out of plates and giving their creation personality. I like the fact that there are no links to social networks or in app purchases. I don't like apps like that, thank you for keeping kids safe.
Improvements One thing my kids weren't to happy about was that they had to redo their picture when the ipad went to sleep. I could not find a way to save it. Different backgrounds would be great, in solid colors and more scenery (ocean or sky). It would be great if there was a way to keep items together when moving the picture around, for example making a face and you decide to add legs to the head.
General review Wonderful app! My kids loved making different pictures with all the different food. They had so much fun making snowmen out of plates and giving their creation personality. You know it is a great app when kids would rather play than watch tv. I also liked that there was no in app purchases and social networking.

Pin Tiki Ball 1.0 [text] [video]

What I liked I liked the graphics and the details of the trees and other items on the island. The game was easy to pick up, but i wasnt sure if i was supposed to hold the ipad and tilt it or lay it flat and play. I think the pause button is a great idea and the camera button is a great to change the angle of view.
Improvements I think there needs to be a back button in the game screen. My kids played the app before I did and they some how set the app to Spanish. I wasn't able to figure out how to set it back to English at first but after random button pushing I was able to do so. Perhaps putting an icon next to each of the options might be useful so it's recognizable what they are even when the text is in different language.
General review Fun app for all ages. My kids have fun playing this app together or by themselves. Loved the animated creatures in the game and the island themed music. The different camera views is a great feature. I would like to see a back arrow on the app to get to settings and instruction section.

EdgeMates - US Capitals v1.3 [text] [video]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I liked that this is educational and teaches the person playing the right states and capitals by lighting up and playing a sound if it is a correct match. I played all three levels and liked that more squares were added for each level. I also like that there were options to turn on or off sound and rotate the tiles.
Improvements I think when the pairing is wrong it should make a buzzing sound or display a red X so the person playing knows its wrong. I would also like to see more variety on the squares for pairing. I also think there should be a back arrow so you can get back to the help tab or home.
General review I think this is a great app for practicing and memorizing the states and capitals correctly. I will definitely have my kids practice their states and capitals with this app. I find it to be challenging and addictive at the same time, since you need to match all the edges correctly to win the game. I didn't want to put it down.

Fire Rescue! [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I like the graphics and the friendly voice. I like that there is repetition dialing the emergency number and that the app goes over what to do during a fire, rescuing animals, etc. They have fun with the mazes and puzzles. Best of all they now know what should be done if there is a fire or other emergency.
Improvements I noticed that in the maze section the circle doesn't always follow the finger when dragging, especially around corners. Also, when my son was cleaning the fire truck, the sponge got stuck when my son moved his finger back and forth. Another thing I noticed I had to swipe the firemen at least twice to get them down the pole.
General review Excellent app for teaching kids what to do in a fire emergency. I think the repetition of scenarios is key for learning what to do. My kids ages 5 and 7 have played for hours and like it. Best of all they now know what should be done if there is a fire at home or other emergency.

Heidi story collection - 3 in 1, Version 1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I like the illustrations and the narrators voices clear. My 5 year old liked the stories and told me about the characters when he read the books. He really liked the story Heidi told of her life with Grandfather and Peter. I think the quiz section is a great way to see if the person reading the story got all the details. I like the different sections and like how they engage the reader.
Improvements I don't like the scrolling yellow bar over the words as they are read. I think it would be better to see the individual word light up when it is being said. That way younger readers grow familiar with the words. The dogs barking/animal sounds grainy or far away. In the alps story when Heidi and Grandfather are eating the yellow highlight doesn't work properly, it skips to the end of the page and sits there. in the advanced readers section of book two, the text on the page with the hand organ is over the picture of the people.
General review Well thought out app, with beautiful illustrations and story of Heidi's life. I like the different sections and like how they engaged the reader. I thought the quiz section was a great idea. My children really enjoy this app and had fun reading it and liked the interactive parts as well.

Sentence Builder [text] [video]

Rating
What I liked My 7 year and I played this app together and she picked it up right away. She played most of the sections and said it was easy and fun. I played it and went through all the lists, I liked how it started off easy and got more complex. I liked that you could add your own sentences and that the app can have multiple users.
Improvements I think there should be different levels to unlock. But adding similar words in as choices would probably make it more challenging for older kids. It will be great if the table that shows all the sentence to be built shows which one has been completed or not so the user can go directly to the sentences that haven't been completed. I also noticed in the subject verb adjective section the sentence "The little girl is sad." I think the graphic is inappropriate because she has heels and breasts. There also should be a repeat symbol instead of the speaker, I thought it was to turn up the volume.
General review Great app for teaching kids how to put together correct sentences. I could see my daughter take the time and think about the sentence, especially when she used the correct word but it was capitalized instead of lower case. This is app is great for kids just starting to read and older.

Blendamaze [text]

Rating
What I liked I liked that the game started off simple and got more complex. I thought this was great for my kids to learn to blend the right colors to get the correct match for the level. My 5 year old had fun playing the different levels and really liked the paint section making his own color.
Improvements In the paint section I would like to see the paint last longer when the marble is rolling. I noticed that sometimes when I got the ball right by the hole it would take a few times to get it to go in, even if the ball rolled right over it, maybe it was the angle I was tilting the device?
General review I liked the challenge of getting the correct color. The paint mode is so much fun to create colors. I lost track of time playing this app. I'd say i'm addicted to it! Both my kids enjoy playing this app and like mixing colors. I think this is a great app for all ages!

Magikid Umbrella v1.0 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I played this with my 7 year old she was able to pick the app right up and play. My daughter and I liked the interactive graphics for all the rain scenes. I think the different items that are used as an umbrella is a cute way to teach show kids what they can use when it rains if they have no umbrella. I also like the soothing music throughout the app which I think is nice for kids.
Improvements I did notice that if you accidentally touch the screen too many times it restarts at the Umbrella page. My daughter thought it was weird. She also suggests that you be able to change the bow to go along with the outfits. We also noticed that the girl has no mouth or nose, that bothered my daughter. I think you should also include a game that could tailored more to a boy.
General review Cute app for young children. The app has clear story narration and is easy to read along. The interactive graphics in the story are fun for kids to tap and see what other items can be just like an umbrella. I would like to see another game added to the app.

Cinderella : 3D Pop-up Fairy Tale v1.0 [text]

Rating
What I liked This is a great app for children 3 and up. I liked the music and the readers voice. The graphics are cute and the interactive graphics are a great way to keep kids attention. I think the pop up activity at the end of each section is fun. The characters are cute and I like the expressions the step sisters make when trying on the glass slipper.
Improvements In the read to me section I think it would be a good to have the words light up as they are being read so the child becomes familiar with them. In the interactive areas the ground wasn't level and somewhat grainy in the front. I think the arrow should light up when its time to turn the page on the read to me section. I think the sister and Cinderella should sit in the chair to try on the slipper. The giant foot looks odd.
General review Great app that takes a classic story and turns it into an interactive pop up. My kids liked the story and had fun doing the interactive activities in the story. I like the teaching aspect of forgiveness at the end of story. This app is great for children 3 and up.

Animal Jigsaw Puzzle! v1.2 [text]

Link to the App Store

Rating
What I liked I liked the music and graphics. I liked that there is 20 different levels and that you could choose to make the puzzle 4-49 pieces. That is a great option for all levels of player. I thought the timer was a great way to see how long it took to finish the puzzle and see if you can better your time.
Improvements Instead of the app opening right to other games available by the developer, I think it should have buttons to chose to play the game, instructions and other apps on the home screen. After the puzzle is correctly out together it should say congratulations, instead of congratulation or great job. The icons need to be labeled better on the puzzle page.
General review Nice music and graphics. Fun puzzles for children ages 3-7. Many different puzzles and levels of difficulty to choose from. The timer is a great way for kids to see how long it takes them to finish the puzzle and a time to beat. Like the option to have an outline or blank canvas to complete puzzle.

What I liked I liked the graphics and music and thought it went well with the wizard theme of the app. The instructions throughout the app were helpful, but could use a few more details especially for new players. The review and graphs are nice in the latest progress section, the static electricity is neat also on the latest progress section. Big plus for no In-App-Purchases, only mild violence, & no social networking.
Improvements I completed the whole game and went back to it a few hours later and it took me back to the beginning, it would be nice for the app to remember where you left off or move you to the next level of difficulty. The apprentice section is very long, after so many questions it should give the results for the level.
General review Great wizard/ space themed app. Clean graphics and nice sound effects. I like that there is a multiplayer function with the ability to email results. I liked that negative numbers were included in the app. I like that app does arithmetic, fractions and geometry. Great app to play while reviewing math.

The Legend of Momotaro - Version 1.0 [text]

What I liked I thought the tips were very helpful and detailed. I had fun tapping different items and learning what they were called in Japanese and tracing the Kanji. The narrator had a nice clear voice. It was nice to learn historical facts about the different items in the story.
Improvements I noticed that some of the Kanji did not light up and it made a clanking sound almost like it was locked. I like that there is a read to me option but I think the word should light up as it is read so a new reader can follow along. Also as the story went along I had to flip to the next page even though it was reading to me.
General review I really liked story and especially liked that I learned some Japanese words as I read the story. I liked the learning the history and meaning of the different fruit, flowers, etc. in the Japanese culture. Well thought out, detailed app, clear narrator and outstanding graphics.

SirMania - Play & Learn v1.1 [text] [video]

What I liked I played with my 5 year old and he liked it and said the app was cute. I liked the hand drawn illustrations and thought the sound effects were cute. In the find the mouse/rat game I liked that by tapping on the different items different sounds are made or animals appear, etc. the snow scene was cute also with the carrot nose that the rabbit doesn't eat and the snow woman asks for it back, my kids thought it was funny.
Improvements I would like to see a pause button in the app. I also think there needs to be more variety after you've played the app through a few times. There should be rewards or something to get the kids to keep playing more than once. There needs to be a menu button while playing the app if you want to pick a different game to play.
General review I think this is a cute app for younger kids age 3 and older. Nice hand drawn illustrations and cute sound effects. I thought the animals that pop out when you tap different things and different the noises they made were funny. I think some tweaks need to be made to get kids to keep playing the app, for example more variety/difficulty in the games.

What I liked My 7 year old played by herself and really liked the find the difference game and playing the piano. My 5 year old played all of the games and said that his favorite were colors and collect. I thought all the games were fun and would recommend this app to a friend.
Improvements In the piano game the frog sounds like a duck, it should sound like a frog so children are learning the correct sounds. Both my kids and I played the slide game and thought it was too hard. I couldn't figure out the pattern to get the whole picture correct, I got about 3/4 of it.
General review Great app with 12 games to choose from. My kids and I really enjoyed this app when we played it together, especially the piano because of the different sounds. Nice graphics and sounds. This app has a nice variety of games to play for all ages and would recommend thus app to a friend.

What I liked Cute graphics and great sound. I like that there is a variety of sound choices instrumental to choir. I like the interactive graphics and that you can have lyrics on or off. Great way for the kids to learn the correct lyrics and sing along. My favorite song and graphics have to be from Frosty the snowman! Great idea to have different graphics for each of the songs, it makes it fun for the kids to tap the pictures along with the songs.
Improvements When I purchased the additional songs I tried to play them from the wreath where I purchased them and it just kept saying unlock Frosty when I tapped on the icon to play the song. One thing that would help is for you to be able to play the song from the wreath or once the song has been unlocked to take you back to the snow globe to play the songs there.
General review Fabulous free app my kids and I have fun singing along to this app. They played each song several times and laughed together at the different things, whether it was Frosty throwing snowballs at them or characters popping out of presents, etc. Nice variety of sound choices and option to have lyrics on or off for kids to learn the words.

Wubbzy's The Night Before Christmas [text]

Rating
What I liked I liked that there different options for how the book could be read. The videos had a great message for kids. Help area was explained well. Loved how the words were highlighted on the read to me book and at a good pace for newer readers. Great idea to have a game in the book to keep kids engaged.
Improvements I do not like apps for kids that take them to the internet, even if it is to the apps website. I would like the app better if facebook and twitter are taken off. On the interactive sleigh game there is no penalty if you get the items wrong. In the paint section it was kind of hard to select different colors.
General review Fun app for kids to read along to the night before Christmas. Nice interactive graphics in the read to me section of the app. Cute videos with good message for kids about Christmas. Lots of great options in the menu section to chose from for example, videos, paint, games and pages. Overall, well designed app kids will love it.

Legend of Fat Ninja [text]

Rating
What I liked This is an interesting app that is somewhat similar like angry birds but with a twist to the game play. I like how you can tap on any part of the screen to get the fat ninja to go to that direction and it really differentiate this game from angry birds. I like the art style of the app and the sound effect and music, it really complement the game play and complete package.
Improvements Unlike angry birds, I can't see the rest of the level prior to launching my character. It will be great if I can preview the whole level so I can plan my move. When my character is flying I feel like the frame rate is not keeping up making the background becomes very blurry.
General review This is an interesting twist to an angry birds like game with simple game mechanic addition that really makes it better than angry birds. I always have an issue with certain type of game with fast moving background giving me motion sickness and unfortunately this is one of them. I'm sure I'm in the minority so I'm not going to fault the game for it.

What I liked I enjoyed playing turn based rpg in the pass and this game really brought back some old memories. For a turn based rpg, the game is easy to use. I was able to play the game without reading any instruction so this was a big plus. The game don't have any social media link or external link
Improvements The art style of this game is definitely not for me. I thought it was strange that during the cut scenes, none of the non main characters have any eyes. The app crashed on me after the fourth turn the first time I played the game before I had the chance to save yet. I would like to be able to move a commander with all of his/her units all at once instead of moving them all one by one. I find it hard to get to my units from the in game screen. The diamond indicates where they are but I still have to find them my self. How about taking me directly to the units when I click on the diamond.
General review This is a turn based rpg game that should be fairly easy to pick up for veteran players. The art style is definitely not for me and I find that getting to my units were not easy. Fight mechanic is easy to do and to understand. I can't see my self recommending this app to any of my fiend.

What I liked I love how you can play with the puffer fish in the main menu. This is a clever idea. I love the graphic on the book and the various interactivity on the pages. The narrator has great voice and easy to follow. It has narwhal in the story! I love how the app remember what page I was in whenever I leave the app and return to it later.
Improvements It wasn't obvious to me that I can tap the top corner of the screen to get the menu button to appear. I was in the setting screen and dint know how to get out. I assume it was the door in the middle of the picture is I keep trying to click on that. On each page it wasn't natural to me that i have to tap on the screen to get the next button to appear before I can go to the next page. I would like it if there is an option to have the words are highlighted when the book is being read.
General review This is a great book app with an interesting story. A lot of interactivity through out the pages which will make the kids busy and engaged for a while. I have slight issue with the navigation but it might be just me. The graphics are nice and music and sound effects are great.

What I liked My 7 year old and I played the app together she liked following the clues on the daisy and that it got dressed up and ate. My daughter liked the interactive graphics in the Volcano coffee pot story, especially the jam and popcorn part. The banana story was cute, I thought the banana looked like a lion at the end with the almonds all around the plum.
Improvements Better hints need to be given for the daisy at the beginning of the story second daisy and the moon placement, i kept trying to use the three moons instead of the single one in the story. My 7 year old didnt like that you can't brush the daisy's hair. In the banana story some of the pronunciation is off for the word almond it is pronounced "al" mond and it should be "all" mond.
General review My 7 year old daughter and I played the app and really enjoyed the interactive graphics in the stories. I think the Volcano coffee pot had the most detailed graphics and story. Sometimes it took my daughter a few tries to get the clues in the stories, but the hitting the question mark gave visual hints that a child understood.

What I liked My kids and I had fun adding fruit to the trees and moving the animals around. Great colors used in the graphics and nice sound effects. My kids thought it was fun to take pictures of the scenes they created. We enjoyed decorating the castle with the different decorations.
Improvements My kids said that they would like the castle to be moved around like the animals. It would be nice to be able to put the hats and glasses on the animals and people. I tried shrinking the hats and glasses and couldn't get them to stick. It would be nice to have multiple backgrounds to choose from. Also wondering what the bear does other than sleep?? There also needs to be directions on how to use app.
General review Nice clean graphics and sound effects. My kids and I enjoyed making our own scenes. I thought the sound effects were soothing. We had fun taking pictures of the different scenes we made. I do think there needs to be some instructions on how to use app. and would like to see the castle be able to move around and different background choices as well.

What I liked My 5 year old son played this for awhile and said he liked it. The graphics are crisp and the narrator is clear. My son was able to solve the word puzzle for each picture in no time. I like that you can turn caps and music on and off. I really like that there aren't any in app purchases or links to social media.
Improvements There needs to be a clearer home or back button in the app. It took me awhile to find it by tapping on the screen. I'm not sure what to do in the work bench/ tool section. Instructions on how to play the game should be posted in the help section of the app.
General review Great app for kids age 2-6. Boys will like the app because it has tools and cars in it. The word puzzles are a great way for the kids to learn how to spell the object in the picture using upper and lower case letters. Nice graphics and sound effects.
